Re: The moment that changed your life forever

    Have had several:
    Surviving a brain tumor
Getting accepted to and then leaving med school
meeting my gf (no doubt she's "the one")

Can't imagine if either of my parents, grandmother or brother died

It was a tense 3 days after being released from the hospital. I grabbed a 3lb bag of sunflower seeds, and called into work sick for the next 3 days. Spent the those three days in front of the TV eating the seeds (until my mouth literally bled from the salt) as a replacement for the dip and to keep me busy. The bruised heart actually hurt every time it beat, so I had pretty good motivation to clean up. heh No drugs, or even alcohol since, and life, while not perfect, has been far more rewarding for it.

                That's awesome(that you've stayed clean)
I watched my pop go cold turkey...stopping drinking after a decade of drinking about a bottle of scotch a day and about 4 cases of beer a week. I think that's when I realized that you can do just about anything if you decide you want to do it.
Basically like you...he locked himself in.....with tons of coffee and juice and after about two weeks of what I could only describe as horrific.....he didn't drink for pretty much the rest of his life(until after Sept. 11th, I guess he thought I was a goner and had a few.....but he kept it to two or three beers every couple of days).

                Keep it up.

Re: The moment that changed your life forever

I have 3 that come to mind.

At 18 I Graduated USMC boot camp.

At 24 My neighbor, now my wife, brought over a plate of cookies on Christmas Eve to say hello.

At 27 We celebrated the birth of our first Son.

For those that have overcome addiction and tragedy my thoughts are with you. I've been blessed with the fact that I have not had yet to face anything like that. I'll keep counting my blessings.

Re: The moment that changed your life forever

                        All mine are family related:

                        1) The day I met my wife.
                        2) The birth of my son.
                        3) When my son had surgery at six months, a tandem surgery with a urologist and an orthopedic surgeon.

Each one taught me a different lesson, and have forever changed my views on the world.

Nice to hear about others with similar experiences. Glad your dad was able to turn away from it. Every once in awhile I get the urge to have a drink, when I'm down, or out with friends, but I can't. I just don't have the genetics for it. I'm missing the SToP gene. I do something all out, or I don't do it at all, which is a danegrous combination when mixed with drugs & alcohol.

First verse I learned was Psalms 119:11, and it's remained my favorite over all the years. It's funny because it references heart, and that's what nearly killed me. I think everyone has one that means something to them. This one means more to me because His word is my true treasure here on earth, and it's something I'll always have with me regardless,of what the world brings against me, the challenges I face, or all the times I fail.

It's funny because I'm old now and I've turned huge computer geek. Used to have long hair (down to middle of back) and party with a very rough crowd (hung out at a low rent biker bar). When I tell people, they don't believe me, because I don't cuss or engage in crude conversation and they don't see how it's possible. Their eyes usually get pretty wide though when we start swapping stories from years gone by. Shows what God can do in a life. Truly transform it.
