Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in
Wow that's just wrong. You can live off it for short periods of time because your body has extra fat and muscle to burn for energy. Your body will go into starvation mode though so you will see your energy drop drastically and your weight loss will slow. If you then go back to eating a higher calorie diet you'll quickly gain back any weight you lost.
You don't need to do all this crazy stuff to lose weight quickly. Eat a healthy balanced diet with regular exercise and you'll see the results quickly enough.Comment

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in
I think his point was that Sting needs to be careful with limiting himself to a point he cannot realistically maintain over the long haul. Your diet ODogg, seems like something you can conceivably still be doing in 5 years. Sting has already been able to maintain <1000Cal for short periods of time before, but it isn't realistically conceivable over a long time span. If he pushes his body into a "starvation mode" he will both hit a wall on his weight loss and when he starts to fall off his diet he will rapidly gain back any losses he made.
It's kind of like your fasting idea (I think it was yours). You can do it every once in a while, but you know it isn't something you can do over an extended period of time. I'm in no way diminishing what either of you are doing and think it's very commendable, you just have to ensure it's something that is sustainable.Comment

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in
If you are working out on a daily basis, I can't imagine how your body properly functions on only 800 calories. Hell even 1100 is a low calorie count. Calories are units of energy. Simple as that. I just think people should consult with trained professionals before making such drastic changes in their eating habits.
You (Sting) said your body works differently than the majority but you are still a grown man and 800 calories isn't really helping you out.
But you will do as you please. I wish you the best.
@ ODogg, what is a normal weight?
You should never WANT to relinquish muscle for the sake of losing weight. The key to it all is burning fat, not muscle. Building muscle also burns fat.
How much lifting are you dudes doing?
I do agree about the 800 calories as far as muscle. I don't think I'm building muscle on this diet but that's not the plan right now. I'm just trying to shed lbs. My plan is: once I get to the weight I want to be at, I'm gonna jump on my bud's program to add weight (muscle, good weight) through his program.
Lifting. I do none. I'm not trying to build muscle currently but I will when I get to where I want to be. I know building muscle would help my weight loss, but right now I'm just taking on one task and that's shedding lbs.Comment

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in
Just curious, Sting/Odogg, do you know what your body fat % is currently?
I was never big into weighing myself weekly or bi-weekly, more like every 2-3 months. But what I was more concerned with was what that weight was composed of.Comment

Hey ODogg, I had your omelet today for breakfast, and it seems like there's something off... it just seems like there wasn't a ton of liquid, and it was overpowered by the amount of veggies in it. It tasted fine, it just wasn't what I was expecting.Rose City 'Til I Die

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in
Giggas, hmm...that's odd man, I've had raves about that before. Maybe up the onions and cheese a little to help it out next time.
As for me, last night I tied one on and had about 12 beers. So I finished at about 2,000 calories. And i'm drinking a beer right now waiting for my buddy to show up and play some Madden.
I had some weight watchers pizza bagels and an Amys organic enchilada for breakfast/lunch today so I'm sitting at about 500 calories.
Yes I'm being bad, but I'm reporting it and you know what, this is part of my program too. I mean being bad. Because this is part of me being on a lifestyle change and not a diet. I'm not making excuses. I hate excuses. I just want everyone to know that it's important to me that I'm able to accept that sometimes I am going to not be perfect. And that's ok.
The difference in this and an excuse is recognizing the fact of what I'm doing and demanding from myself that it's a rarity and not an every day occurrence. Because it's important to accept that, recognize it and work that part of life into an overall routine.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in
I'm gonna eat really bad tonight for the Final Four. We bought a bag of chicken fingers and a huge frozen pizza. Gonna knock out 35 minutes of cardio and 13 minutes in the sauna around 3:30 and be home and cleaned up in time for tip.Comment

Was reading the average person burns 1500-1800 calories a day at rest."Good music transcends all physical limits, it's more then something you hear, it's something that you feel, when the author, experience, and passion is real" - Murs (And this is for)Comment

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in
I don't even want to step on the scale tomorrow. As of yesterday, I had gained 4 lbs from my Thursday weigh-in. After what I've eaten today I'm probably around 220 or so. I was 212 on Thursday. Ouch
Gonna hop back on the wagon tomorrow. Holidays kill my diet..so does the Final Four.Comment

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in
Don't sweat it mate. We all fall off the bandwagon at times. It's getting straight back on asap that counts.
I personally think the whole "starvation mode" is overdone. Sure your metabolism will slow slightly if you keep your cals too low for too long but it's not like you body magically stops burning calories. If that was the case you wouldn't see anorexics (no i'm not advocating anorexia in any way shape or form) with such low levels of bodyfat. Whenever you are in a prolonged calorie deficit you body will burn fat and catabolise muscle and as long as you aren't being rediculous (ie eating less than half you bmr per day for weeks at a time) i don't think you'll do too much harm. Besides if you are having a weekly re-feed or "cheat day / cheat meal" your average cal intake is higher and should therefor stave off this dreaded "starvation mode" anyway.
Personally i think the notion that if you don't eat for a few hours your body stops burning fat and you starts burning muscle is heavily driven by the supplement companies to scare people into buying protein shakes and bars.Comment

Re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in
I agree with Jonesy. I believe "starvation mode" is a myth and that the ideas of eating 6 meals day or eating every 3 hours may work for some but are in some ways counter intuitive as it doesn't affect your metabolism at all but does keep your insulin levels high, which can limit fat loss.
I tried such a diet (combined with some bodyweight circuits) in January and after the initial 10lbs (IMO water & lack of carbs) the results stopped and i wasn't enjoying eating. In February I signed up for a gym ($10/month no contract) but it wasn't until i started doing intermittent fasting in March that the pounds starting coming off. I adopted a plan called "Eat Stop Eat" which is basically two 24 hour fasts each week, drinking only water/coffee/tea/zero calorie soda during the fast. If you keep a workout regimen (I do stronglifts 5x5 3 days a week) you'll be losing 1-2 lbs a week and the weight loss will be fat. I do it on Thursdays & Sundays, starting from dinner Wed/Sat to dinner Thu/Sun. You never have a day that you don't eat, but you will have a significant caloric deficit on the fast days.
On New Years Day, I was 240 and miserable. I started ESE at 228 on March 3rd and this morning I weighed in at 216 and i'm hoping to get down to 200 by June. All this in a month where on separate weekends I ate ridiculous things like 50 munchkins, 1/2 dozen donuts (this past weekend) and 4 cinnabon cinnamon rolls. I do keep a mental count of calories and still try to eat balanced, but i wanted to show that even really bad decisions like the ones I made in March don't have to destroy your efforts. You should still eat smart but you don't have to with ESE. I will say that trying that other diet for two months did change my approach to meals even now in that I'm always conscious of calories and i'm always trying to balance protein and vegetables while limiting carbs (but not being strict about carbs). What used to be 3 drumsticks is now two drumsticks and 1/2 cup of spinach/broccoli/small salad.
It really comes down to calories in & out and ESE is a great way to knockout two days worth of calories and enjoy the food when you do eat instead of shaving off calories and eating when you're not hungry.
People read/hear "fasting" and think its unhealthy but that is really just a testament to the success of the marketing by the billion dollar food and supplement industries. Read eat stop eat (pm me if interested in a copy of the e-book) and see that intermittent fasting might actually be one the best things you can do.Last edited by Tha_Kid; 04-04-2010, 10:18 PM.Comment
