What are your shoes like? They worn down? You wearing the right kind of shoes?

My shoes are only 2 months old, so not worn down at all. They are definitely the right kind of shoe, as I've been wearing a neutral shoe for years and even went through the treadmill test when I bought these (Brooks Defyance).

        I did a 4-mile run yesterday and I didn't have any issues.

What iPod earbuds do you guys use when you run? When it's cold I can still use the earbuds because I wear a toque but without the toque, they keep on falling off.

I prefer listening to podcasts when I run compared to nothing.

I set my own personal record last week running 6.5K. The goal seems too difficult right now but I would love to run 10K before the end of August. This may sound strange but I got a runners high after I finish running.

I just use the standard ones. No issues for me. My wife, though, has to use the ones that wrap around the ear, as like you, the regular buds just fall out.

If you just did 6.5K (congrats), you should be able to get to 10K no problem by the end of August.

Posted in the fitness thread, but figured i'd post it here anyways. Started Couch to 5K with my wife. I'm in pretty good shape anyways, so this first week has been fairly easy for me, but I wanted to tackle it from the beginning with the wife, as she hasn't really exercised since having our second child last January. Our goal is to run the Race for the Cure in September here, and then start training to run for longer distances afterward.

Lol I also posted this in the fitness thread but thought I would here as well to get the impressions from runners on these things.

Has anyone tried those Vibram shoes for running? They look a bit silly but apparently are good at helping you run without injury in the long term and are kinda like running barefoot with a bit more protection.

                      Re: OS Running Thread

Funny that you posted this because I've been on a minimalist approach following some serious calf injuries that I can attribute to running with too much support.

I run in these now and am running at a healthy pace and loving life again. I'm convinced that barefoot/minimalist shoes are the way to go.

For anyone really wanting to read up on the effects of this would be wise to at the very least read this article. CBC ran an awesome piece on it in Canada that I can't find online at the moment. Runners must read!

I need to find a motivator. Back then I had a reason to compete. Now that factor is out of my life, so I really don't feel the need to run.

Any help? I've basically completely stopped running, so if I restarted again, it would be an uphill battle again. I would by no means be running 5 minute miles.
Motivations for me are definitely races, it makes training a lot easier when you have a goal pace/time/race to look forward to..

At this point 10K seems way too long of a distance but as long as I continue to run I think I have a shot at it.

I have days where I want to quit after 1K (lol) but I tough it out.

We all have those days, man, trust me. I just had one the other day where it felt like my ankle issues were flaring up and I thought 'maybe I should just stop now.' but I kept going and wound up having a great run by the time it was over.

The thing for me moving forward is to get up and my runs in early in the morning. Last year, I tended to wait until 10 a.m. and I'd just get my energy zapped by the sun.

thanks for that Xavier, very interesting read.

edit: Is this the show you were talking about? http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/epi...ct-runner.html

My running has been going great in the last few weeks and I have been running every 2nd day and have missed a session. This morning my newborn woke my wife and I up at 4.30am and while she was feeding him I figured seeing as I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep so I'd go for a run instead.

I started off only planning to do around 5k in about 30 minutes and I just felt awesome and was in a real groove so I figured why stop now so I kept running and ended up going for just over 50 mins including a fairly steep hill climb of about a km. Not sure how far I went exactly but it must have been between 8 or 9k's I would say. Considering the longest I have ever run was 8K in high school cross country 15 years ago I was pretty happy about that and I can see my goal of eventually doing a half mara is possible.

There is no better feeling than killing your race and expectations. 1:39:43 Half-marathon. 3rd place in age group (20-24) with an overall pace of 7:37!!!
