Space Station Cameras Capture Views of Hurricane Irene From Orbit
Aboard the International Space Station, an Expedition 28 crew member captured views of intensifying Hurricane Irene from an altitude of 225 miles at 3:33 p.m. EDT on Aug. 22, 2011, as the tropical system passed to the north of Hispaniola. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting a track that would take Irene near to or east of the Florida peninsula as a major hurricane on Friday with a possible landfall along the southeastern United States on Saturday. -
Re: Hurricane Irene
I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even see a drop of rain out of this. They should be fine.
Looks like Irene will most likely clip the Carolina Outer Banks and then head up the coast and make landfall on Long Island or maybe just east or west of there.Comment

Re: Hurricane Irene
I've watched enough of these things unfold to know that the projected path can change hour to hour. On another site someone posted that the weather channel noted the storm "wobbled" a little more to the west. Take that with a grain of salt though. We aren't out of the woods until this thing has completely passed us by.Last edited by 8; 08-24-2011, 05:33 PM.Battle.net: xXKING08Xx

Re: Hurricane Irene
The 5pm update has taken Irene back to the west just a tad. Nothing huge but it could be the beginning of a trend back to the west. Hopefully it's not but it's better to be prepared then to get caught with your pants down.Battle.net: xXKING08Xx

Re: Hurricane Irene
I really hope people all along the coast from NC to Maine are prepared for this. I really fear that people are underestimating just how strong this hurricane is and will end up completely caught off guard.
With the models trending more to the west, that spells trouble for places like DC and NYC. Flooding would certainly be the greatest threat.Originally posted by CardsFan27This is the 3rd time John Calipari has been to his first Final Four! What I'm Currently Listening ToComment

We had some rain and wind yesterday and last night in Cuba but nothing severe. Hurricanes usually miss the area where I'm at. Hope everyone is prepared and safe on the east coast.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

Re: Hurricane Irene
Yeah, hurricanes have always seemed the least "dangerous" of the nature disasters; tornadoes, earthquakes. Just some wind and rain. But it's so much so quickly, I mean, we've all seen the videos from Florida after a hurricane. The place is decimated, flooded insanely. Heck, look at New Orleans from Katrina.
The danger is very real. I'm taking this pretty serious. I'm 20-30 minutes from Philadelphia, and I think we're going to get slammed. I don't think the flooding in my immediate area is going to be bad (I live at the top of my street, which is on a hill), I'm mostly concerned about downed trees and the unpleasant feeling of having no power for God knows how long since it'll likely be widespread. One of my friends says he's excited to be at the beach when it hits.
*sigh*
Everyone stay safe, okay?
The only good part would be if I don't have work due to state of emergency and/or no power to the store.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: Hurricane Irene
Yesterday, most of the models had this thing clipping the Outer Banks, and a potential landfall at either Long Island or Cape Cod. Several models had it missing everything. However, there were still a few models that took it more to the west which left this guy wondering if that trend would continue.
Today is not looking so great for the entire Northeast. Only one forecast model still has this thing missing everything while everything else is taking it for the Megalopolis. The only saving grace for the Northeast is that Irene will encounter shearing before it makes a potential second landfall, but as massive as the storm is, it will still be strong CAT 2 storm when it makes a second landfall Sunday.
