    Re: Hurricane Irene

A "direct hit" into NYC and well lower Manhattan is very difficult and nearly impossible with the way lower Manhattan is positioned. With that said, storm surge is going to be big here, even if weakened by a more westerly track.

And with all the rain in that region, the trees roots are going to be very weak, so a lot of trees are going to fall, which means power is going to go out for a lot of places.

This is probably one of the worse tracks a hurricane could take into such a big/important city.

I predict that Irene will be the next retired storm name.

Totally agree with this. Especially with the track that this thing is likely going to take and just the sheer size of it. Lots of damage/flooding in such a densely populated area.

The new update is out and pressure has dropped again, down to 946.

Not a good situation at all. Stay safe everyone.

Damn, it's dropping like crazy. Katrina was what, 907 when it hit?

As soon as i get home from work tomorrow i'll be tying down my grill and outdoor chairs, and trash cans. I just hope the neighbors do the same. Have enough batteries and food, need to get some beverages though.

Yeah at peak but Irene wont come close to that, itll probably weaken a little before landfall in NC, the waters arent as warm there.

Thank god this didnt go into the Gulf, then it would have been a big Cat 4-5 storm.

Gotta keep our eyes out in the Gulf during September, it only takes a little bit.

What's the water temperature near the Megalopolis? I would think this is going to weaken quite a bit before it makes landfall farther north.

I really don't think it's going to be that crazy, precisely for that reason. Waters can't be warm enough to maintain something super powerful. I really think one of the next couple named storms will be worse than this one. That said, it's the weird location of it all that will cause the most problem. Even a relatively "whatever" storm can still cause problems.

actually the water temps around nc are just as warm, maybe a couple degrees cooler but not enough to make a difference.

Katrina was at 902 mb I think. Wilma that year was even lower, somewhere around 880.

Looking at satellite images of Katrina in the Gulf scares the **** out of me. That weekend was surreal in the southeast..

What's the word on the DC Area as far as this storm goes? I still need to head back to NY to finish unpacking the rest of my stuff but if they're going to get hit with the worst of this, would it make more sense for me just to stick down here in DC for a few more days or is there still a possibility where the path could change and NY not get hit as hard?

Yeah, depends on the wind speeds and storm surge. Some of the Nor'easters they get are pretty impressive. Hell, there was a blizzard here with 2 feet of snow and sustained winds of 60 mph for hours here a few years ago. Hopefully it resembles that more than a hurricane. Of course, there will be more precipitation here compared to a strong fall storm. And if the eye hits a heavily populated area, that will be bad news.

This whole area is totally unprepared for a hurricane.

Stuff like this is what keeps me from moving to Florida.

Hopefully we don't get hit with this too bad.

cant believe clouds associated with the hurricane are already in eastern NC.

I've got family in NJ and NY so hopefully they stay safe as well as you guys on the east coast. That looks pretty bad. Let's hope it looks worse than it turns out to actually be.

I know I'll be tuned in this weekend.
