I've always thought that it gets trapped in the area by hills and stuff higher than the water, so it can't go anywhere.

Man Vermont is taking a huge beating. They're saying the water might be 20 feet high in Montpelier on Monday.

Up here in Hampden, Maine. We actually had work cancelled tonight (I work overnight at a parts production plant for Toyota). This is the same place that worked every day of the ice storm in 1998 when power was out for over a week, using only generators. The wind has been knocking power out everywhere, so they didn't want to risk it. Chalk us up as another unprepared city.

The flooding isn't an issue here really, but the wind has been nuts. Power has been flickering off and on for a few hours.

                  Stay safe everyone.

Irene fooled them, southern Vermont is cut off from the rest of the USA now. All of our highways and bridges are either under water or completely destroyed. Nobody can get in or out from New York or Masschusetts.

Some of these people were standing on some of the bridges when it got washed away.
So because it was downgraded, people up there automatically assumed that it was safe and the worst was over now?

That's how most people are though. Whenever anything mother nature related is downgraded people just automatically want to assume that they'll be fine going out or doing whatever. I'm sure when they heard "Hurricane Irene" they were a bit worried and wouldn't have gone outside, but once it turned into "Tropical Storm Irene" they figured it wasn't that big of a deal anymore, just a bad storm.

Yeah basically what Canes said. Once it got called tropical storm, people in upstate New York, Vermont and Masschusetts said oh well that's nothing, that is nothing but a thunderstorm.

People went about their business as usual, people were hosting cook outs, hitting the stores back to school shopping since schools haven't started yet up here.

But once those bridges started to collaspe, trees started falling and a river of water was rushing down main st, people started panicking then.

I just feel bad for people who may still have the house and power, but no food in their house. Grocery stores going to be closed for a few days depenidng on how long it takes for the water to recede.

All the highways leading into vermont are closed. So no new supplies coming in for some days either. My deep freezer is full of food, so I am not worried about it.

The main water line that comes to this town broke as well.....so eventually by wednesday or thursday, fresh tap water is going to run out if they can't get to it and fix it.

Stuff like this goes to show you how dependent some people and communities are.

And how those of us who choose to have "stockpiles" for a "rainy day" such as MRE rations, grains in long term storage, etc etc are not "loony" like we get labeled.

One little and yes I say little, because we have had far worse storms in the past can do something like this, imagine a more tragic disaster on a grander scale. ESPECIALLY now that our society is more and more dependent on every little thing, and very few are set up "off the grid" so to speak.

Hope you guys get back to rolling soon.
