The number one threat from this storm was always flooding. In fact, the #1 threat from every tropical system is flooding. Statistically, the #1 killer from tropical systems is inland freshwater flooding. I believe storm surge comes afterwards. Few people are actually killed from the winds themselves.

Ok folks.......here is a half video, half picture slide show of my town today that my wife's niece husband put together. Make sure you have the speakers turned up for you can hear how damn loud these flood waters sound. This sound been echoing throughout the whole town all day.

Re: Hurricane Irene
I think that's the thing. Freaking out keeps people off the roads and prepared for the worse. Otherwise there would've been a lot more people out and about and it would've been more of an issue. This honestly wasn't supposed to be TOO much of a problem for us anyway though. Was always said to touch in NC and then again up in NE with us Mid Atlantic folk not really getting the eye. Luckily there wasn't flooding in downtown Baltimore (I think it was Izabel that had all of downtown underwater) but a lot of power outages. Mine was out for a while.Comment

Re: Hurricane Irene
My town is under water conservation. Main water line is still broken. We only have 2 1/2 days worth of water. Due to this, even the few stores that didn't have a lot of flood damage can't open because they aren't allowed to use water. Same thing with all fast food places.
Luckily......my wife's mom and her sister houses use well water, therefore all we have to do is drive up the road to their house and get more water if we run out of water.Comment

Re: Hurricane Irene
Most of New Brunswick, NJ is under water, getting to Rutgers is now seriously next to impossible, this is from the main road leading to down to NB/Rutgers.

Also the park across from the stadium has turned into a lake, and has slowly been creeping up to the stadium gates;

Re: Hurricane Irene
I'm very, very surprised to hear on FB that a couple of surrounding neighborhoods are without power still. We didn't get it too bad here; only saw one downed tree (in MY neighborhood, too). We lost power from 10PM to 10AM, debris on the ground everywhere but it wasn't like a warzone as it looks like downstate and in other states.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

My parents live just south of baltimore, they lost power late saturday and the power company is telling them the power will be restored by 11:30 pm on Friday. Holy **** that's almost a week. Oh I forgot, we are going up to visit this thursday-wednesday. Luckily it's not supposed to be hot.Battle.net: xXKING08Xx

Re: Hurricane Irene
I was supposed to start working at a high school a couple of towns over yesterday, but they have pushed back the start of school until next Tuesday. I guess 80% of the town, including all the schools have no power, and they aren't expecting it back soon, so they canceled school all week to give people a chance to leave town instead of stay at home with no power.
I was really lucky, my street, by Sunday night you could barely tell it had even rained.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: Hurricane Irene
Well fresh water has ran out here. FEMA was passing out a case of water per a household. That line was LONG. Still have thousands throughout this state with no power and today is WARM.
High 80s and it suppose to be like that for the rest of the week. And it suppose to rain up here saturday and sunday.
States troopers, police officers and Army national guard is on edge and ticked off due to civilians constantly getting in their way with their kids trying to take pictures and crap. They straight arresting people now for obstruction.
This one detective looked like he was ready to knock this guy out for shouting he has rights and can go where he wants to go. I seen a good number of people yelling that crap today, men and women.
I felt like slapping all of them for getting in the way.Comment
