    Re: OS Firearms Thread

My brother bought five AR 15's and my dad ended up buying one from him and giving it to me.

I know west Virginia concealed weapons law is anyone with a violent crime: misdemeanor or felony may not have a handgun.

I have a misdemeanor battery and was wondering what West Virginia Gun laws are for me. I want to go to shooting ranges and such like I use to as a hobby but don't know how the laws are.

I know there are differences between rifles and pistols so I would like to know what the differences are.

I went to google but couldn't find much to help me out. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know the full gun laws of West Virigina (I live next door) however the type of battery is the determining factor in the state. Since it wasn't a felony you should still be able to purchase a firearm. However if your battery charge has to due with domestic violence you will be barred from buying any firearm. Here is a list of battery charges that will bar you from purchasing a firearm.

Research West Virginia state laws on domestic violence and firearms, including what's regulated and what's not. Learn gun law details from Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence today.

As far as concealed carry is concerned technically you will not be able to get the permit. However if you talk to your local sheriff they can sometimes lift that restriction if you plead your case that you are not a violent individual. (This varies state by state and I'm not sure if its in the sheriffs power in WV.)

I'm not sure what it falls under but it had to do with family. I'm trying to get it expunged. Only crime in 23 years so it shouldn't be a problem. Happened at least 2 years ago.

Well a good rule of thumb is if you have the term "domestic" anywhere in the charge then you are probably barred. If not then you should be OK. Try to get it expunged or like I said go talk to your sheriff many will be willing to work with you as long as its not spousal or child abuse.

You should be fine then. Concealed carry is probably out of the question till you get it expunged. You can open carry in WV so if you wanted to travel with it that would be the way to go. Before you run off to the gun store and fill out a form 4473 make sure nowhere in the system is domestic battery attached to your record. This can be accomplished with a quick trip to the courthouse or call the lawyer (assuming you used one) from your battery charge. Hope this helps.

Thanks, my dad said he may buy me a little .22 rifle for my birthday since its cheap ammo and very reliable to shoot at the range. That's what brought this up, wasn't sure what the case would be on that so that's why I was asking these questions. Do I still have to do the sane things or is there a difference? (Sorry for the barrage of questions)

Gonna go look for a high cap 9mm today. Gonna hold a few different ones before making my choice: Glock 17, Springfield XD9 Service Model, Sig SP2022, Beretta 92, and maybe a few more. Leaning toward the Glock due to availability of not only the gun, but accessories. We'll see though. If it doesn't feel right in my hand, then it doesn't feel right in my hand.

Bought my second gun a few days ago

Magnum Research Baby Eagle ii compact. 9mm 12rd mag polymer frame (it's the American import of the Jericho 941, standard sidearm of the Israeli Defense Forces). Gun is made in Israel by IWI and Magnum just stamps it with they're branding (and stupid name).

Took it to the range yesterday, it's a sweet shooter. Too bad ammo prices (all prices really) have gone up

I picked up a Gamo Silent Stalker .177 Pellet Rifle this weekend. Wanted something quiet enough to kill rabbits and squirrels in areas that have houses nearby.

Pretty crazy how powerful these new pellet rifles are. Shooting clean through a 2 x 4 into the catch box while sighting it in at 30 feet. 1300 feet per second is no joke for a pellet rifle! Never owned a pellet rifle that kicked before like these do.
