Not only would that break fire codes, that would be just distracting to class everytime a 8 year old had to go to the bathroom or to the office.

Like it or not, the kids are eyewitness sources, and that's what you have to go by. Nobody said you had to watch the coverage. Twitter supplies details as they go along.

Either way, it is depressing that in that scenario, a school day would always be under a code red.
How about a simple "buzz to get in" system for the building? That way any visitors could be sent through the office as a filter before anybody could get anywhere close to a kid. Guy looks shady, you hit a button to get a cop there and don't buzz him in. Buzz a guy in and he seems shady, the secretary calmly leaves the room then hits a lockdown button.

Again, children, constantly leaving to go to the office and the bathroom. It's just impractical. Not only that, most schools are on a budget crunch, and this one school in a small town doesn't appear to be rolling in the black.

Wouldn't really work out in regards to daily classroom life, what may work is going back to the idea of some type of officer being around. In 5th grade we had a suspicious guy around school so they immediately go on the intercom say a certain code and all of a sudden the teachers are closing blinds, turning off lights, locking the door, telling students to be quiet, etc.

Unfortunately if this shooter was a son of a teacher at the school then he probably was not seen as suspicious unless he just barged in(Idk there policies/entrances in regards to walking in) or was waving a gun around in which case there should have been a lockdown.

The school system sent out a letter and said they have this system in place, I believe. They read the letter on CNN, but that was a couple of hours ago, so I can't remember exactly what the system in place was.

Understand your points, but given this black eye on all of humanity, how impractical is too impractical, and how much $ is too much?

I know at my girlfriend's elementary school you must be buzzed in to enter the school. I believe most if not all elementary schools do the same exact thing.

But as Motown just pointed out. His mother was a teacher there. So no one thought it was concerning.

I don't see why not, I remember many classrooms over the years where the doors were locked at all times. It was kind of up to the teacher's discretion, lock the door (door always able to be opened from inside, locked from outside) or don't lock it. It didn't seem disruptive, in fact looking back they were the classrooms least likely to be disrupted.
