Yeah, I would think sit ups would be easier for myself, but like I said, it's been a while since I attempted something like that, so maybe I'm just misjudging the difficulty

SMH, everybody that puts on a uniform knows before joining there will be annual fitness tests. So because you are over 40 and out of shape you going to sue because you failed the test ? WTF ? That is your own fault.

I'm not really interested enough to read beyond the excerpt GMSS provided, but I wonder if they had a push-up amount before that they weren't allowed to have "grandfathered in" for them or something that they're suing with.

It's one thing to maybe lower the push-up amount for them a bit (something I also wouldn't agree with), but it's something completely different to annex the fitness test completely. That's opening a whole can of worms right there.

However if they recently jumped it up from something like 45 thus taking these women out, this is like the MPAA deciding to retroactively change the rating of an old film that's already out to NC-17, thus pulling it from theaters it was already in or something like that. That's a really stupid example, but you know what I mean. Their complaint may then be valid, but if it's for the right reasons then I don't know if a grandfather policy could be implemented.

But to completely ditch a fitness test? That I just can't agree with.

Re: News that make you say WTF?

No way I could do 52 push-ups. I've never had good upper body strength and struggled to do 10 in high school. I'm a lot stronger now, but still couldn't do 52, maybe 20. Sit ups on the other hand, I was always good at them. I think I usually got 100-110 on the 2 minute sit up tests in high school. I pushed myself to the absolute limit though so the muscles in my midsection would be pretty much dead at the end of the test and I had to lay on the mat for a couple minutes to recover then my abs would be sore for several days afterwards.

As for the story, I also believe people in law enforcement as well as other emergency services should be required to maintain a certain level of fitness and as such should be tested regularly. I also didn't read the whole article, but I would think that the threshold reps needed to pass would be lower for females than for males.

Re: News that make you say WTF?

What kinda push ups are we talking here? You see dudes all the time go down like 4 inches from their highest point and that counts as a push up. Were the ankles restrained during the situps? Makes it much easier. If we're babying this stuff the test shouldn't be that hard to pass, but if we're doing chest to the floor push ups there's zero chance I'd be able to do it. Wait... what about females with enormous boobs? Wouldn't chest to floor push ups be easier for them? It's official, push ups are discriminant against men!

Seriously though, I have no idea why fitness wouldn't be a requirement for police. We see jokes on TV all the time about the fat blob officer pulling up after 10 seconds of the chase to let his young fit partner chase the guy down. We need fit officers on patrol, I couldn't imagine if both partners were the fat stereotype guy.

It's not like the cops were even fired. They were working desk jobs, probably getting paid the same, and had less danger in their job. Cops have to be fit enough to chase criminals, if you can't pass the test, you probably can't help anyone that needs you.

This is straight up garbage. If you can't perform a physical test you should be on desk duty.

Why can't it be based on merit and performance alone? Sadly I know why and see it often.

I don't understand how it could even be a question that cops/firefighters/etc need to pass a physical fitness test. Man, woman, transgender, transsexual.. whatever; you need to meet a minimum level of fitness to perform the duty, or you're only putting yourself at an even higher risk of danger.

It's unbelievable that's even gotten as far as it has.

And then they're gonna have some out of shape cop pass out while chasing a perp or something....some civilian gets injured, and everyone'll complain he was out there in the first place

You have to pass a state physical test to be certified as a law enforcement officer BUT there is no real requirement moving forward stating that you need to pass a yearly test to maintain that certification.

We have a yearly test that isn't hard. People don't even do it and there's no consequence. I get in the "Exceptional" time bracket and my reward: I'm exempt from the test next year. I wish I'd get a reward like one free hour to workout a week since it's kinda part of the job to be in shape.

                                It's utterly ridiculous.
