Record Sportscenter? We can’t be that far apart in age but I had no idea people did that, lol.

Unless you were away at work/school, then I can understand.

Beware the Slenderman is a documentary by by HBO films. There's trailer is on YouTube if you want to check it out.

I'm with ITT though. We watch a lot of documentaries, although the ones we watch are generally about a murder(s) or some other horrible crime. There's a ton of good ones on HBO, NetFlix and Amazon Instant Video. Some of them are really well done and really stick with you. I still enjoy a good movie but I usually get more out of documentaries.

Now it's just trash. I know it's bad when I'm dreading watching a baseball game on ESPN.

Growing up I had to get up in time to watch the morning Sportscenter if I wanted to see what happened the night before and if I missed it I would have to wait until I got home in the evening and see the box scores in the paper. I had to sprint to the bus many times because I waited until the last second trying to catch as many highlights as I could. My how times have changed...

The old traditional SportsCenter format is obsolete to me personally. With the internet and league specific channels, I have no more a need for it, than I do watching 2-3 people debate the latest barbershop/water cooler sports topics of the day ESPN normally airs nowadays.

If fact I would argue the latter makes for better background noise if I happen to be home on a weekday morning or afternoon.

I really am suprised by the large number of complaints I see on the internet about SportsCenter. Mainly because I never knew so many still relied on it, or even cared enough for it to still be even a little relevant to their lives.

I was obsessed at that age. I'd sometimes watch it three times through. Ah the good times. Watching Jordan highlights and suddenly my mom taped over it with that dumb show "General Hospital" Unforgivable.

Yep. As someone that now works 60% from home, I totally understand why these shows exist.

OSers, in general, tend to lose sight of how niche this environment is. ESPN isn't creating content for people that know what bird rights are or which player is due for a hot streak because of his BABIP.

This is true. But in the process they've lost alot of people too. I'm guessing First Take minus SC is probably one of their best shows as far as viewership. I mean hot takes are akways entertaining but the programs just lacks substance.

I feel like SC goes with this fine line between big annoying pointless stats to make them look up on advanced statistics, comedy, and and serious debates. But it all just comes off incredibly forced.

                Just so gimmicky and forced.

This might generational? This is certainly ESPN's logic, though (which maybe based on what you say they're correct about).

The difference for me, though, is ESPN wasn't just sports highlights. It's true that you can find those anywhere now, but Sportscenter used to be a place where in 1-hour or so, you can credibly get caught up on everything that happened in the sports world on that day. Including - and this is the key for me - the actual narrative of each game (in a nutshell, anyway). Highlights without context are basically boring IMO, but what Sportscenter used to do well was package and arrange highlights in such a way that in 90-seconds or so, you could get a good sense of what happened in a game.

Example: a typical NFL game highlight (that ESPN didn't broadcast itself - in that case there are way too many minutes spent discussing the game) consists of 1-2 touchdowns and then a score. That tells you nothing about what actually happened in the game. Did one team go out to a big lead then hang-on down the stretch? Was it a back-and-forth affair? Was there a key incompletion or INT or sack that changed the momentum? You get none of that on the internet or with twitter highlights, and now you also get none of that on Sportscenter. Last year, there was 'coverage' of an NCAA basketball tournament game on ESPN that consisted of a highlight containing 1 PLAY (!!!). I mean, in that sense, I guess Sportscenter is making itself obsolete.

Not to mention, the high entertainment factor of the presenters back in the day, like Dan Patrick and my all-time fave Kenny Mayne. I used to watch the same Sportscenter like 2-3 times in a row just for Kenny's jokes. Now it's basically just someone reading the evening news.

For sure - the highlight packages were well-put together and the hosts were great. Craig Kilborn, Kenny Mayne, Dan Patrick, even Steiner and Berman back in the day all were so much fun to watch. No one had the wicked sense of humor of Mayne, though...

The issue is their personalities and humor were within the context of the otherwise relatively prosaic world of sports highlights. I don't know if I'd want to watch those guys debate each other on a split-screen for 3 hours a day, but ESPN is basically all-in on debate shows all the time now. Honestly, I miss the days when they'd show "World's Strongest Man" from 1983 or Aussie rules football from Canberra during off-peak hours, instead of the constant "4-guys-yelling-at-each-other-on-a-split-screen" drone that they have going on now at all hours of the day and night.

I miss cash game poker, where they showed every hand. To me tournament poker is not real poker. There is skill to it, but still, give me cash games every time. But, i enjoyed watching poker on tv back when i started playing seriously. It doesn't interest me much anymore, especially what they air now.
