Re: Uncommon Opinions
It doesn't make sense to say pro players don't have fundamentals. If the college game is filled with sound fundamentals, and the pro game gets 95% of it's players from the college game, how then would the pro game have a lack of fundamentals?Last edited by dsallupinyaarea; 03-21-2013, 07:00 PM.NFL - Vikings

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Okay, I lied..
Some of the best teams in the NBA play a "flashy" brand of basketball these days, with the exception of a team like The Spurs.
Basketball as a whole is trending away from crisp fundementals because so many of the game's best players are filled with all kinds of physical ability.
It just seems worse in the college game because there are a hell of a lot more players, compared to the few teams you see in the NBA.
You're talking about some colleges primarily known for academics a lot of times too and are not very likely to be drawing in some of this elite talent that eventually makes it tot he NBA. 300+ D1 schools gives you more to look at and survey.
It's just not as simple as saying that the college game lacks the fundementals, especially when the Heat and LAC are playing track meet basketball out there a lot of times because of their physical advantage.Comment

EDIT: Also, the Clippers are just a bit below league average in pace. Not sure where you're getting that they are a track meet team.Last edited by dsallupinyaarea; 03-21-2013, 07:30 PM.NFL - Vikings

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I've found that this is a commonly held belief by people that watched the NBA about 10-12 years ago. And I'll admit that post Jordan era was really rocky for a minute. It's just simply not true anymore. Ironically, the Heat and Clippers are led by two of the most fundamentally sound players EVER. Some advanced data suggest that the Heat run as close to a perfect defense as possible.
EDIT: Also, the Clippers are just a bit below league average in pace. Not sure where you're getting that they are a track meet team.
When you watch The Heat, Clippers, Thunder, etc. you see a lot of flashy plays, even if Lebron only averages less than one dunk per game on the season their style of play offensively leads people to believe this.
In turn, athletic college basketball players hoping to make it to the next level are more inclined to try to isolate and take matters into their own hands more, rather than buy into what their coaches are saying.
This is true, regardless of what kind of stats you want to present and is really the point I was trying to make, even if I did a bad job of it.
There are just not many "systems" in college basketball anymore, except for the veteran coaches who are typically playing with less physically gifted guys who can run straight through you to the basket.
It's just how I view things. The NBA does have an impact on what people are doing at the collegiate level and teams garnering nicknames like "lob city" give off the impression of a track meet style of play, even if some stat somewhere shows otherwise.
Statistics are one thing, perception is something else..Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
That's why I think Pro Football is the only Sport I follow seriously. You pretty much need to play with the proper fundamentals, and technique to be successful in mostly every position.
Basics on Defense is keeping your pad level low, lower man wins in the trenches, keep your head up, go for the waist of the runner and below.. wrap up and drive through always seeing what you hit for tackling. If you're a Cornerback you need to have the proper technique coming out of your backpedal, reading the Receiver and reaching in from the proper side to swipe the ball away. Otherwise you will get burned, or draw a lot of penalties. Receivers need to use the proper footwork, hand usage to beat jams at the Line of scrimmage, and route running ability to be reliable on every down.. QBs have to learn all the pre-snap reads, intricacies of formations, motions within their offense.. etc.. yada yada.
Every now and then some physical freak of a Wide Receiver can come in and just blow by people on a Go-route and out jump every one.. but that can be countered by Bracket coverage, double teaming. Or a return guy can be shifty and just make a Special teams unit look foolish.. i.e Devin Hester.. but unless they learn basic fundamentals of a skill position they will only dominate on Special teams returns, and they can be kicked away from.
So in general you can't just be a work out warrior athletic freak and have instant success in the NFL... a lot of athletically gifted players flop, on the flip side the athletic freaks that come in and learn the intricacies of their position usually end up dominating said position... Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson..Last edited by Feared; 03-21-2013, 08:06 PM.Minnesota Vikings

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I have soured on the sport of basketball as a whole. Even the NBA. It certainly doesn't help that the Magic suck right now (although they are set up nicely for 2-3 years from now) but I've just kind of had it with basketball.
I tried to watch an NCAA tourney game today and chuckled several times at the poor quality of play.Comment

Yeah, but there's still a lack of fundamentals (or utilization of them) in the NFL. Tackling quality keeps going down and down with everyone looking for a big hit. Don't say the NFL is filled with fundamentally sound players. Freakish athletes rule in the NFL just as much as any other sport.badComment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
The passion of the fanbases, the atmospheres of the arenas, and the sheer insanity of the postseason are all things the NBA can't match.
And I just enjoy the college style of play more, warts and all.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn
