      Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread

Saw this thread again the other day and it got me in a grilling mood. Time isn't readily available right now but, looking ahead, my wife usually asks me to grill for Mother's Day. At her request, I've done ribs the last couple years and was kind thinking about it again for this year. Even better, she said that I can get a rotisserie! How about that?!...it's Mother's Day and she lets ME get the gift!

Anyway, I was poking around Amazon and saw the Rib-O-Lator Rib-O-Lator. Has anyone used this? Good/Bad?

I can never justify the cost for a Thermapen...doesn't help that we're saving now, but just not cheap. I really want one though lol

Side question...anyone else wonder where Curahee went when they hop in this thread? He was the bbq post master for a long time

I can confirm the Thermapen is awesome. At least 4-5 seconds faster than my old thermometer.....but yeah it is pricey

So, after many years of putting it off I'm finally tasked with doing pork BBQ.

My mom requested pork BBQ for Mother's Day so this weekend will be a fun learning experience.

              Any suggestions/recommendations for a first-timer?

I did not take any pictures unfortunately, but it turned out great. Put it on at 9AM and pulled it off about 6-7 hours later - smoked with hickory for the first three hours. Its so tender and moist. Damn.

We still have another since we bought a double pack at Costco.

Now if only I could get my ribs to be this good.

                      Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread

I may be late to the party on this one but my wife usually asks me to grill for Mothers' Day. The last few years, it's been ribs but we saw something recently about grilled pizza so she decided to change things up this year.

I've gotta say...it may have ruined regular pizza for me. It was THAT good. Used lots of charcoal to keep it hot, threw a few hunks of hickory on for the fun of it, and used a pizza stone. Only thing I wish I would have done was try making my own dough...but I have never done that and didn't want to risk it so I went with some pre-made store-bought dough (NOT a store-bought crust...uncooked dough). It was rectangular crust and I got three of them. Cut them all in half so each of us (me, her and two kids) could make our own and then did bread sticks and cheese sticks with the other two.

The sticks didn't really rise at all (not sure why I thought they would) but were a hit...had to keep yelling at my kids to wait for the pizzas to be done before they took more!

We each did a different pizza and there was enough that we all had a chance to try others' concoctions. We even got lunch out of it the next day and it was great reheated. My biggest complaint was that I put too much cheese on mine but I always seem to do that.

Been thinking of doing a neighborhood cookout and might go this route if we do. For that, I'd probably use pre-made dough again but next time it's just us, I might try making my own.

If you're talking about the pizza, I just followed Weber's video guide. Used enough fuel to make sure it stayed nice and hot (I think it was around 500, can't remember for sure). Once the coals were ready, I put a few chunks of hickory on and pre-heated the stone. Prepped the pizza inside while that was going on and threw it on for about 3 minutes, rotated it 180* and then left it on for 2-3 more minutes. I'll probably try walking the time back a little bit next time though just to try to get more of a "fresh melt" to the cheese (sorry...there's probably a term for what I mean but that's the best I got right now...)

If you do it, just make sure to either put the pizza on parchment paper or put cornmeal on the stone first. (I actually did both because I took the dough off some of the parchment paper) Otherwise, you could have trouble rotating and removing it.

Honestly, I can't think of anything easier to grill. Even better, if you do personal ones, you can let the eaters prep theirs rather than trying to cater to everyone's palate. It requires more time at the grill though, of course.

Alder wood... anyone used it? Only heard great things and only tasted the same.

Thinking about getting a fat bag of chunks for my Dad for Father's Day. Reviews were all positive. Seems like the smoker's choice of wood, especially for fish.

I'm shopping around for gift ideas for my dad. His birthday and Father's Day are around the same time. He has a few nice grills, a stand up smoker, etc.. I thought something like this may also come in handy.
