    Re: The Lego Thread

I didn't buy too many of the The Last Jedi sets since I didn't really like the movie all that much but the Resistance Speeder is really cool. I did get Kylo's TIE, the Resistance Bomber, and the island training one with Old Luke. Only have built the Bomber so far. I got backed up on some Lego sets over the holidays because I was working on my Christmas village so much and since then I've started on the modular buildings.

I agree that diner is super nice, I bought and built it last month. I also have the Palace Cinema, Grand Emporium, and Detective's Office (haven't built yet). I really like these modular buildings, so that's where I've been spending my time lately. I'm going to set up a street scene of them to display when my Christmas Village is taken down (which I need to do my next free weekend!).

I also recently bought the big Iron Man Hulkbuster set. It looks very cool and will display nice next to my Shield Helicarrier

Okay guys so I realize this question might be fopa and if so I'll drop it. But have any of you guys checked out the Lepin brand? It's basically a Chinese version of Lego and to put it mildly they basically copy the Lego sets verbatim. But the prices are astronomically lower. I love Lego but it is just so damn expensive. Just curious if anyone has ever ventured this direction.

My son received one of these for Christmas because that's all my mother in law could find in what he wanted. He basically said it's not the same. The pieces don't stay together as well as Lego. He's built probably over 30-40 sets, so he would definitely be able to tell.

That's what I figured. There's got to be some hiccup in quality for sure. I may try one just for the heck of it because it won't cost me much. Thanks for the reply.

From what I can tell the Lepin brand looks pretty good from a distance, like when it is on your shelf, but if you look up close you see the defects in it. Some of the studs have dimples in them and like what was set, they don't snap together as well. I buy offbrand baseplates and the occasional minifigure if it looks good, but I don't know if I would be happen with a real set of theirs. They are much more affordable that's for sure.

Great input and pretty much what I'd thought. I cracked and ordered a couple to see how it goes. I love building the sets but after I don't have a place to display them so I usually just let the kids use them. I rarely ever buy them for myself either. With 4 kids we have a **** ton of Legos lol. But I've got the itch lately. Just not the extra funds. I do feel a bit dirty going this route for whatever reason lol. I'm a big rule follower and feel as if I'm going outside the lines. Ya I'm a bit weird lol. What can I say. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Got two sets for $65. On Amazon it would have been $217. One was discontinued so that did skew the price a bit. But anyways we'll see how it goes.

Finally finished Kylo Ren's Tie Fighter that I had bought in March. Pretty sweet build. It's a good size ship too.

It's finally here! My son is 6 and has started some full-blown Lego fever. He's always liked the general idea of them but has recently gotten into actually playing with them and watching YouTube videos of them. Every time we go to the store in the last few weeks, he's asked if we can go down the Lego aisle..."just to look" (probably knowing that I can be a pushover too).

Anyway, I've got an idea to "grow up" the kids' playroom now and turn it into a Lego city, country, world, etc. room. Something like aukevin does for his annual Christmas village but year-round. Any tips for getting started?

I've been working on a city that I will keep up the 9-months of the year that my Christmas village isn't displayed. It's been fun starting it. My first step right now is just a single street. I'm doing the Creator line of modular buildings and then will extend to a amusement park and beach. All those sets are fairly larger and not to scale with the normal sets you see like the fire and police stations, banks, etc. I use those smaller sets for my Christmas village so that I can fit more into the village. So you just decide on what you want to concentrate on. I would bet your kid would enjoy all the fun (and cheaper!) Lego City sets like the police, fire, artic, etc stuff rather than the expensive Creator modular buildings. Then throw in some of the Ninjago sets too for a little variety. I think LEGO is releasing a new train this year that would a fun starting set to go around what will eventually grown into a big city.

Good to note. I hadn't even really thought about the scale differences. I'm a fan of the modular stuff, too but they tend to be more pricey and take up more space. Maybe we'll make separate worlds or something. Or maybe I'll realize that I can save a lot of money by doing the smaller ones...

What do you build yours on? Is it a standard folding table? Something you built specifically for it?

I build my sets on a 6' folding table that I got from Target. It's generally big enough to build large sets. The UCS Millennium Falcon was hard to build on it but it's hard to build anywhere lol. I have MDF shelving boards laid across a pool table that make up a 10x8 ft area for my village and city. I can't go any larger than that without making the room even more crammed lol.

Finally got one of my Lepin sets I ordered. Kylo Ren's Command Shuttle. Super fun build. Quality isn't quite on par with Lego but it's not far behind. Peices fit together nice and snug. Had 1 missing piece in the set. Had a replacement in the kids bins lol. Mini figuers are a much bigger step below in quality. Details just aren't there and they seem more generic. But not a deal breaker really. Can't complain with how cheap it was ($38.50). All in all I'm impressed.
