 re: Off-Topic

 It's 16. I don't understand why that wouldn't be the absolute answer?

Do your parentheses which end up being 4. We now have: 8÷2(4). At this point you just work left to right since there's no function with the 4 in the parentheses so it's just 8÷2x4.

Y'all out here letting Maj stump y'all, man?

 re: Off-Topic

That really was an incredibly easy equation. Parentheses first, then division, then multiplication. 16. Easy. Maybe it's because I'm 37 and I learned math the correct way. Yes that's a shot at common core. That mess is just stupid.

 re: Off-Topic

Based on how it's written, the answer is 16 and not 1. If the division sign was a long fraction bar instead and that quantity of two's were all underneath, then the answer would be 1.

 The underlying process has nothing to do with common core, and frankly the CC standards and practices get a bad rap for all the wrong reasons.Last edited by Blzer; 08-02-2019, 03:30 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

This is why it would be a good question. Absolute value doesn't mean "make it positive," unlike what the Internet world would want you to think. Correct.

It's only true for all x ≥ 0. It does not hold for negative numbers.

 Some people think that like |x - 5| = x + 5. The whole notion of "make it positive" really starts to fly out the window at that point. It's one of those moments where I'd have to ask the students to empty their mind of anything they think they know about it.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment
