I like how the focus of coverage has shifted from the killers to the victims. Memorializing the victims and not glorifying the gunmen is a good step. Even with shows like The First 48, they cover a show about murders and everything that goes into investigating and solving the crime, in recent years they've made sure to make a point of having a special ending to speak with the families of the victims and sort of celebrating their lives.

Some programs do a lot better with it anyway, but they try and not focus on the victims until they can get a lot of info about them and stories from family/friends.

The only reason some ever even focus on the perpetrators at all is as a larger point about whatever political stance they're trying to make, or trying to figure them out and see what they can do to prevent these in the future.

There are some sad stories out there, too. I bawled hearing some of them on CNN's live radio stream.

Now, onto further rantings:

My mom was relieved when she heard the Gilroy and Dayton shooters were killed/ended their lives. I'm the opposite. It's my firm belief that they see this as their endgame anyway, so they're planning on ending it all then and there; even the El Paso shooter initially planned on doing that per his manifesto (though I guess he changed his mind, possibly out of hoping to be further heard/understood). I'd rather not give them their wishes and let them suffer in prison for the long haul.

It's also better to know them than not know them; that is the only way they'll be able to take further strides in the future. We know so much more about the El Paso shooter's motive than the Dayton shooter, and it's a bit cryptic for the Dayton person as well especially given that he killed his sister and hospitalized his other party companion, and that it was only half a day after this other shooting.

I'm not saying I'd rather officers put themselves in harm's way to neutralize the perpetrator at the possible expense of their own lives, I'm just stating my otherwise desired outcome if all else remains the same. It's just better knowing than not knowing, for me at least.

Yeah. At the end of the day, ****ed up people are going to be ****ed up with or without video games. I could see trying to make a case that people with these issues gravitate toward violent games, (I don't know if data exists to support even that idea) but that's never the case that's tried - it's always that the games are the cause...and that's just junk.

Research with aggression and media is all correlational. It's impossible to account for all the variables you'd need to account for to prove causation. There is a mimicking aspect in young children, and if they're not taught the difference between media and reality, that could certainly lead to more aggression, but it's still not a 1:1 relationship.

What you mention about personality characteristics speaks to the limitations of the research into aggression and media. I'm sure people who have a more aggressive personality gravitate toward that kind of media, but how do you determine the chicken or the egg?

The idea of watching aggressive stuff as a cathartic experience and would relieve aggression isn't supported by research, however. Lots of smart people used to think that, but once they started designing studies to test it, that didn't hold up.

I've never liked the video game excuse because a guy can play 10 straight hours of GTA and immediately pass a driving test because the guy knows the difference between fiction and nonfiction.

I was watching that for a few minutes last night. That dude for Canada with the beard and the white full arm and leg pads was definitely "that guy". Like the guy who shows up to your rec softball league wearing 69 and sliding hard into 2nd to break up a double play.

Random thing I never gave much thought to before, but why is the save icon STILL a floppy disk?

Clipboard for pasting, scissors for cutting and all that are still relevant, but the save icon obviously isnt.

Ah man, most of the (other) guys who drove the growth of those old Off-Topic threads have been largely in not completely MIA from the neighborhood
