Right, so if it was intended for the base to be a negative, it would/should have been written as:

(-3)² + 10

But it wasn't.

Hence, the answer is 1.

I work with numbers all day, but I hate math. When I first started going back to college at 27 it had been 11 years since I had a math class. I took the placement exams and actually scored really well so I was put in a much better math class than I was smart enough for and it was a struggle.

If I was answering that question I would have said 19, but I could see the reasoning for 1. Why bother putting the negative there if it's not for the 3? I can't remember ever working an equation where that's not the assumption.

Back to school traffic sucks.

After getting used to a 30-40 minute commute during the summer, it's hard to adjust to getting back to about an hour plus commute.

It will get better but this time of the year is a pain in the ***.

So I posted that math problem on Facebook. Ten people have said 1, and twenty-two people have said 19.

Anyway, it looks like this already fizzled out on here, so to seal it off I just wanted to assure people of the correct answer to the math expression:

You think I don't know that? I didn't say that he didn't. But that's exactly it... I literally never yet said whether he had or hadn't. Now I have. Sorry, I forgot to list the members who correctly said 1.

What, if someone says the correct answer I should just not say anything? His explanation could have been faulty; he also could've shared the incorrect answer, like at least someone else has on here. I still haven't told the Facebook crowd. Half of them are "sharing" the exact opposite thing by thinking what one of my friends was thinking:

Apparently according to my Facebook, so does Siri.

The list of 19's on my FB has now grown to twenty-one. 68% of that group is saying the wrong answer, no matter what explanation someone is giving before.

It doesn't matter what explanation someone has given so far, unless they went into great detail as to why 19 in fact doesn't work here and which cases it would actually work, plus speaking on the modern-day order of operations. EDIT: Actually I only saw the post that you had liked, and not the one after that no one has liked that he explained it with, which was better... but it still doesn't explain why Excel, Siri, and other programs may give 19, or whether there could just be more than one answer. Some people actually believe that mathematical ambiguity really exists, just like lexicons when you get a phrase such as "I saw a man on a hill with a telescope."

Now I'm not saying: "Ergo I am he who may solely provide that which one yee shall state thine verified script of truth and holiness," but I did in fact present the problem as a math teacher with the intent of seeing some screwy answers (I actually was expecting someones to even say -19, which did not happen), and for those who may have not yet known I want to provide some finality to it.

I'm not intending on calling them out in any way but giving an example, but have SmashMan and Majingir come back in to this conversation and "liked" Bruins' post? Did they see that I liked his post? They couldn't have, because I didn't. The only one I liked so far was the one that showed two different answers by BurghFan (why do you think that I posted what I did after his?), and he as well could still be confused as to which answer this should give.

There was a point to this problem, and it wasn't about dinging the bell for the first person to get the right answer. You even said it yourself about the other problem:

Those posts go viral and usually only about 25% of the responders get it right.

And then everyone fights over which answer is right over something we were taught in grade school.

In this case, I gave because the conversation stopped. Had it kept going, no matter what BurghFan said, you can bet some would have still said 19. Don't believe me? Look again to that Facebook crowd.

I'm not trying to be. I literally made that point in that post.

I wasn't attempting to state something that somebody else hadn't. I was confirming the correct answer for those who had stated it. Again, sorry that I didn't list their names.

"Smartest guy in the room"? It's a grade school problem. That's not to belittle those who got it wrong.

You know what I don't like? I don't like that I can't get into a conversation about something because people like you will think that I'm attempting to flex my "smart brain" (however you'd apply that to these silly problems is beyond me). We were just in another conversation about Black Panther's CGI, and heaven forbid I can't say anything about it that sounds overthought, but there is a YouTube channel of people with millions of subscribers devoted to that exact same thing who are allowed to. Oh wait, they are professionals in the CGI business, I forgot... well, I am a professional in the math business. I'm not trying to jump in with those credentials, I like to back up the reason for something with knowledge that I happen to have.

BurghFan undoubtedly showed that, and he gets all the credit in the world for that. Me saying 1 has no impact on what he said before, none whatsoever. But unlike this crowd, the FB group is going on with both answers and their own explanations without any such conclusion yet. Some people are even asking me: "So what is the correct answer?" I was going to let this linger until I felt it had hit its end. Once another conversation started, I realized it had hit its end... so I sealed it off. That was the only intent with my post. Maybe the GIF was a little much, in which case I'm sorry.

Yeesh. You know, I don't think I'm "smarter than anyone else," but I do think there are certain people who don't give themselves enough credit for how much they are able to process and think while something is happening. In other words, I think people are much smarter than they choose to make themselves. That probably comes from being a high school math teacher, and getting that in classes literally every day.
