Was watching Hollywood Squares and one of the players definitely had a Homer Simpson moment without realizing it.
For context, the secret square if you get it right you win a trip.
It was their turn, they could either go for the block (choosing the person who would wind up being the secret square) or the win (choosing someone who for sure isn't the secret square since they were chosen in the last round).
They opted for the trip (which is probably a 5-10k prize) instead of going for the win (which would have you playing for 25k).
Which brings up the Homer Simpson like moment I thought of.
"Money? I want a trip!"
"Money can get you a trip."
"Explain how!"
"Money can be exchanged for goods and services"
Safe to say, the guy lost the game but he won the trip....but the money would've been nicer for sure.
I saw some report saying YouTube will introduce generative ai ads, as if their ads aren't bad enough where you're watching some 15-30 second ads just to see some 3 minute DIY video.
But it had me wondering how much more personalized ads might get one day. Obviously on tv you can't alter what ads appear for different people (as in, if you and your neighbour watched the same channel, it'll be the same ads, but different cities might alter depending on the local network).
But imagine if streaming ads were so much more personalized or related to the show you're watching.
For instance, I was watching a show on tv and one moment in it someone got into a car accident. An ad that followed shortly after by pure coincidence was a car insurance ad. Imagine if ads become so personalized to the point that the ads could show up during breaks related to what you're watching to that extent.
Lots of sites don't seem to be working properly for me this morning. Only sites I've been able to get to and navigate have been OS and APOD (Astronomy Picture of the Day)

Obviously I don't keep up with how/when/where the episodes air, but I never knew they were part of HBO for the last decade. They remained on PBS, but any new episode would be delayed on PBS by a month. Not that I think that would impact a kid watching the show in any way, kids will watch whatever is on.
But the Netflix deal keeps it on PBS, and episodes will air on PBS the same day they're added to Netflix, so there's no month long delay.
This is how TV should be, specifically sports. It's great having streaming options, but a big part of the appeal/popularity is how easy/basic it is/was to watch.
As it relates to kids shows, while most kids today do just watch streaming things anyways, it's great for all those families who don't have streaming services and/or want a simple way to have shows for their kids.
Things like YouTube kids is a great app for kids to find so many different shows to watch for free, but many times it seems like bigger name shows just have clips/conpiliations on there and not full episodes of shows.

"Simpsons did it", or should I say..."Futurama did it"
Imagine how horrifying that'd be if it happens one day where all ads you see are literally ads of YOU using their product. A car commercial, you're driving the car! A beer ad, you're drinking their beer having fun at a bar! A banking commercial, you're on vacation because your advisor helped you save money.

Sounds like a not great but not terrible Twilight Zone episode. (or probably Black Mirror, but I haven't watched that yet). Good idea, me.
woke up today to smoke alarms, they were all going off, no smell though, maintenance showed up eventually, checked the alarms, good to go (i hate smoke alarms, they scare me so bad)
few hours later I go down to the basement to check if the washer and dryer are available, they both are, woohoo!
the washer takes like 25 minutes, but I gave it 40, when i got down there to transfer from washer to dryer, the dryer was inexplicably running. I'm totally thrown off, the dryer takes way over an hour to run and it was empty when i first got down there
I panic, go back upstairs, compose myself (I'm weird, I know), go back down after 10 minutes have passed, and keep in mind this basement laundry area has a motion sensor light, the light is off, the dryer is off, I open it just to peek, and it's empty

Smoke alarm thing happened to me a couple weeks ago. Damn thing just started going off for no reason and I couldn't make it stop. Had to permanently deactivate it and maintenance installed a new one the next day.
Dryer thing is a bit freaky. There're only 1 washer and 1 dryer in your building? Do the machines have timers on them so you can see how much time is left? How much time was left on the dryer when you came back to find it in use? Did it still have time on the cycle when you came back and found it empty? Was it raining? Maybe someone had thrown some clothes or something that had gotten wet in the dryer real quick to dry them.

yep only one washer and dryer, coin operated, no timer display
It was rainy, which I tried to rationalize as to why the alarms were going off early, like dust particles absorbed moisture and gave false smoke signals, but I'm a Michigander and it's pretty humid here and you'd think if that was the issue it'd happen all the time
The dryer thing, my friend was saying something similar, maybe someone threw something wet in real quick, but you have to use the full amount of quarters no matter what, there's no "quick dry" option, and this is low income housing so it's like, people aren't gonna just waste quarters like that, and with the motion light being off, it was just weird

I love the period Thanksgiving to Christmas to New Years but but IMO the three month block from Memorial Day to Independence Day to Labor Day is equally great, and underrated too.
Anyway, Happy Memorial Day. Hope you guys are getting good outdoors cookout weather in your neck of the woods.
I'm only learning about this now, but three weeks ago it was reported that Brad Arnold (lead singer of 3 Doors Down) was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer.
One of my favorite bands. I only found out because I as investigating whether they were coming out with new material. Obviously the opposite of that is happening as they are canceling their summer tour.
Very sad to hear this. This is right on the heels of Billy Joel canceling his upcoming slate because of a brain disorder.

Sad to see how the video game industry has changed for various reasons.
Just saw Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World costs $110 over here ($80USD).
I pay half that price for new PS5 games a few weeks after release when its on sale!
I know the reason prices are more right now, specifically for Nintendo, but it's sad how Nintendo used to be the cheaper alternative to PlayStation and Xbox. You'd go for Nintendo consoles and games because they cost half the price of the other consoles.

It’s a bad precedent and it’s even worse because it’s Nintendo doing it. Surely Sony & MS will match and then push the limit themselves sooner than later. $100 games? Ugh. But at least there’s plenty of FTP and cheaper indie games available.
