Yeah, Covid deaths are not comparable to war/terrorist deaths. Context matters. Otherwise people would be outraged at how many people die from the flu every year. And most people didn't even know that number until earlier this year.

I think the main message was to follow the science. I agree, the NBA has rigorous testing and is basically quarantined.

Seems to be working for the NBA, so far.

It's August and we're still doing the flu comparison thing.

We are so doomed. I think I posted in March this might just be one of those tests America can't pass. Ay yi yi.

CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

In the midst of this pandemic there was at least some normalcy.

And the "we are so doomed" comments feel like they are from March too. People not being able to handle the flu ever being brought in this is wild. But it's ok to bring up 9/11 or WW2. The only comparison being made is that both are infectious diseases that kill people.

Regarding the flu, and since the comment is directed at me...the flu is one of those "known knowns". There's a system in place, they plan for a vaccine based on data and the strains being seen months out (sometimes less accurately than others), and there's a solid protocol for treatment and care.

Covid-19 was new, a shock to the system, unplanned, which is the major difference and why a large death toll should matter more than seasonal flu and other morbidities. But you know that.

My work is likely going to offer WFH options once this thing is over, with the overwhelming feedback of the workforce asking about it.

                  So that's a plus. [emoji108]

Now....next is figuring out how I can deduct expense on my tax return next year for six months of WFH, 45-50 hours per week.

If you get a W2, you can't do it anymore. It changed after 2017 or 2018.

Plus, you would have had to itemize anyway - which with the increased standard deduction you may not have had enough anyway.

So next year when its a known known and keeps killing people we'll just shove it under the rug like the flu. Until then, we are all doomed.

                            No.

Hopefully by next year we'll have a vaccine so that individuals will have an increased defense against the virus outside of wearing masks and social distancing. We'll still be conscious of it, just like we are with the flu, which is why doctors and health officials start reminding the public of "flu season" and recommending that each individual gets a flu shot to help them be protected from the virus.

And we aren't "doomed" now by this virus. If people would get out of their own way and listen to health officials, we have a good chance at reducing our positive cases and stopping the spread, but it requires each individual to stop being pig headed and follow the guidelines put in place by those same health officials who are trying to get us through this pandemic until a vaccine is readily available.

And there's the rub. I will never get a flu vaccine and I will never get a COVID vaccine. I am not going to live my life in fear of a virus. Nature always finds a way anyways. As soon as there is a vaccine, there will be something else out there that can kill us and odds are it will be more deadlier. And so on and so forth. Always has been that way and always will. Not saying you should purposefully go out there and risk exposure out of pure stupidity, but also don't live your life in fear and enjoy the experience of being alive instead of hunkered down in your home.

And theoretically, if this vaccine cut down the number of COVID deaths to be comparable to the number of flu deaths, would we be satisfied by that number? What is the magic number that we can say that COVID deaths are just a fact of life just like flu deaths?

I have no idea how you can relate getting a vaccination against a virus to living your life in fear? You're stretching here to make some type of point or just for argument sake????

I get a flu vaccine each year and I live my life just fine and don't stay hunkered down in my home. There isn't a vaccination for COVID but I'm still living my life as normal as possible despite that and not hunkered down at home.

If you don't want to get vaccinated that is your choice, but it doesn't make those who choose to do so any less capable of enjoying the experience of life.

In regards to the edit to your original post, I am not interested in entertaining ignorance.
