I dunno, I’ve changed my tone after Italy. Shutting down a whole country is not an over reaction and not just the flu.

It’s gotta be damn serious if a whole country is on shut down.

If it’s gotta take limiting mass gatherings for a few weeks, so be it.

I fully anticipate that before the day is over, possibly tomorrow, the NCAA will cancel the NCAA Tournament.

^^^^^Yes, why? Because if a player tested positive for the COVID-19 the Tournament would probably be immediately cancelled, if that's the case, then the Tournament shouldn't be played in the 1st place.

My only worry is that if the Tournament isn't played the players don't get paid.

          COVID19: 4641/126672 = 0.0366 = 3.66%

So the mortality rate for COVID19 is 3.66/0.057 = 62.24 times higher. Mortality rate is still low compared to something like Ebola, but still much higher than that for the flu. You have to look at more than just total deaths.
But you also have to take into consideration that there isn't enough testing kits available to test everyone that has/shows symptoms. Therefore, you could have 1,000s of more people with the virus who will survive, thus dropping the mortality rate.

I'm not suggesting coronavirus isn't more deadly than that of the flu, I'm just not sold on how much more deadly it is because we don't have the capability at this time to get all the numbers/facts.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

I'm leaving tomorrow to drive to Louisiana for my son's Taekwondo tournament.

Staying in Baton Rogue and then going to drive through New Orleans for some food before driving north again Sunday. I've been waiting for them to consider cancellation, but the event shouldn't be that large.

Rooms are paid for, tournament paid for, rental car paid for, etc and none of it is refundable. I'm not an alarmist either, but I try to be self aware. My wife and I talked about how when we get back we should probably avoid our elderly relatives for a few weeks just to be safe because my largest concern is being a carrier for this thing because of how contagious it is.

I think that's the hang up for me. My kids are 6 and 3, wife and I are 30 and 25 so statistically we are in the ideal brackets I think. I've been cautioning my mom (who is 50) to avoid large gatherings too because she already has a weak immune system due to having her spleen removed in her 20's + she has lupus.

As much as I love sports and want to see Auburn compete in the SEC tournament/March Madness I would understand a cancellation. Large gatherings really can help limit the transmission of this thing. Won't dive into the politics, but I don't think we were ever really going to be in a position to contain it because there's too much human element and moving parts + programs specifically designed for this sort of thing being removed without replacement. I just really don't want to be a carrier.

And while flu can be treated with antiviral medication, it doesn’t seem like they know exactly what to use for CV.

Some of the stories coming out of Italy of who gets the only remaining medical equipment are chilling. Italy is the example of what we don’t want to face here. It can happen here, and it probably will to some degree.

A lot of people aren’t even being able to be tested for CV. That’s why they’re pushing for people to take responsibility for themselves and limit social contact. The leagues, festivals, and cities are enforcing these precautions with cancellations and postponements.

The media is pushing it, but in this case I kind of understand why it’s being hyped 24/7 because people won’t listen unless it’s in their ear all day, everyday. It reaches some people who panic, others who are like okay will do, and others who tune it out.

At the end of the day, I don’t want to get sick no matter how severe it is. I’m in a position where my social contact is relatively limited (not flying around, being in big cities, etc) anyway so not much is changing. But others are having to make tougher decisions to stay home from work, cancel flights, events, meetings, etc. Places stepping up and making it a policy decision instead of leaving it up to individuals is probably a good thing as it takes the question of it away.
              This right here.

Some lives will be affected and altered and some will not.

We just received a email from our boss we will be working from home starting Monday until further notice. All meetings will be virtual.

I agree with Rockin' Da Mike, so be it if my/our(family) life is altered a bit outside of the daily/weekly/monthly grind. If you have one of the nations top doctors come out and state it's going to get worse before it get's better, yeah, life maybe altered a bit for some of us.

Sure, there is a certain percentage that are going over the top/mass hysteria, hoarding tp, sanitizer, water and whatever else they feel they need for a fallout, but one can easily ignore and scroll on by that noise, ignore them and do what you do.

I do feel that a pandemic (officially stated by the World Health Organization) is different than the flu. If the common flu is later considered a pandemic, that we can compare apples to apples.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

We can make fun of people buying a years supply of toilet paper, but the unknown part is why I think the the global response has been appropriate.

If you want to use the flu comparison then think about all of the differences. We have had decades to study it and understand how to fight it. We have probably built up some natural immunity to it over the years, we have vaccines and even anti viral drugs that target it. All we know about this virus is that it is highly contagious with an incubation period that potentially has people traveling for a week before they realize they are sick.

The currently reported mortality rate may not be truly indicative given the sample size, but it also is not hard to believe that it is higher than the flu given all the things I mentioned (vaccines, drugs, immunity). Better to be prudent and listen to the warnings of healthcare experts around the world imo.

                  This.

Mortality rates aren't full determined yet. Currently they are based off of a self selected population of people who have been tested and confirmed to have COVID-19. These numbers do not reflect the actual population of people who have the disease. South Korea has done extensive population and has confirmed 6000 cases and seen a mortality rate of .6%. Still higher than the flu, but much lower than is being reported. That was as of a week ago so I am not sure if that has changed, but I suspect it is fairly similar. Even here in the US since the symptoms manifest as a cold/flu like it is likely many people have gotten COVID-19 and may be dismissive of it as a normal cold. That person will never seek care or be tested....but that person should count as someone who has the virus and therefore would drive the mortality rate down. There are likely many people who have or will contract the virus that are asymptomatic and therefore are not included in the reporting of "confirmed" cases. These people all push the mortality rate down. The data being reported is only based people who have actively said "I think I might have coronavirus and need tested."

There is obviously reason to be concerned. But the data that is being reported has a lot of asterisks behind it that don't give the whole story. This is a very serious illness that needs to be taken seriously. But the true impacts aren't as clearly defined as some are reporting. It could be much better. It could be much worse. I tend to believe the mortality rate will decrease over time as we learn more. The coming days and weeks should hopefully clarify much more.

This is the best broken down article I've read on the topic of CV. I would recommend reading it if you have a moment or two.

There is no medical professional who said that Gobert got it before Mitchell. He only got tested 1st. Gobert was reckless but he was as reckless as Woj tweet about Jazz players. There is no proof who Gobert or Mitchell actually got it from at this point.

I get the severity of this thing, especially for those people we have already identified, but man we (not literally everyone here) act like it's an automatic death sentence and we should jettison anyone who has it off the face of the Earth.

Every time (hyperbole) you see someone else has this thing they are "being investigated."

Any of us could end up as carriers with or without symptoms at some point. I just try to think about how I would want to be treated and the tone of voice people use to describe others would lead you to believe they are dirty people.
