There is blame to go around but for better or worse our society is too individualistic and even rebellious to sustain a long term quarantine. It's a trait that can be argued is often times to our benefit, but as we have seen the last few months it can hurt us when we need people to make sacrifices for the sake of the community.
A month ago there were people exclaiming that we had flattened the curve so everything was good. But the curve only stays flat so long as we are actively flattening it. Even if we had it beat 3-0, as soon as states called for reopenings, there were wide spread protests of any kind, and people no longer doing things like wearing masks in public in mass... Well a resurgence was kind of inevitable. People here in Georgia had stopped taking this seriously a couple weeks ago and many had stopped wearing masks. It wasn't until Georgia declared a sudden spike in in cases that those masks returned.
I'm not happy with the level of leadership at all levels and the mixed messages that have come all the way down from the WHO, but when I see things like this I just can't pin all of the blame on 1 person or group. My step sister, her husband and their 2 kids moved in with their mom and my dad about a year ago. They live rent free. Their mom has had multiple strokes and just finished her chemo treatments for an advanced stage of cancer the doctors found late last year. She is basically bed ridden. My dad has heart disease and both of them are diabetic. Despite living rent free and knowing that covid is a likely death sentence for both of our parents, this did not stop them from taking a vacation to Florida in early May with the promise to stay away from as many people as they could. We've heard plenty of examples over the last few months about people not caring about health aspect of the pandemic, but when I see this kind of selfishness from someone who is unnecessarily increasing the risks for people they actually love, then it really drives home the point that nothing short of an enforced lock down is going to prevent people from spreading this virus regardless of what anyone says or recommends.
