We actually already have some of this data. From New York:
Over the 31 days ending April 4, more than twice the typical number of New Yorkers died.

That total for the city includes deaths directly linked to the novel coronavirus as well as those from other causes, like heart attacks and cancer. Even this is only a partial count; we expect this number to rise as more deaths are counted.

These numbers contradict the notion that many people who are dying from the new virus would have died anyway. And they suggest that the current coronavirus death figures understate the real toll of the virus, either because of undercounting of coronavirus deaths, increases in deaths that are normally preventable, or both.

I will say that this situation has caused many people - myself included - to not take for granted the simple/good things in life. Visiting loved ones. A nice dinner with friends. Quick drink at the bar. Coffee and catching up. Round of golf with the buddies.

Whenever the next time is that I get to do those things, I will definitely have a newfound appreciation for them.

I'm staying home as long as I possibly can. Hopefully, until this is over. At which point, I will apply for the jobs that the dead heroes who rushed out to save the economy left behind.

Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

Too many posts to address individually, but a few key points.

Like others have said. Our hospitals are not overrun yet because social distancing is in effect and because hospitals are actively working to keep beds open for potential covid patients. I can speak from what several doctor family/friends have told me in 4 different states about them trying to keep beds open. I can also speak from experience for the healthcare company that I work for which operates many clinics around the country for dialysis. Hospitals are expediting the process of getting the patients into our clinics in order to free the beds (and because our patients are at a higher risk). Many elective surgeries are being postponed, and even not-so-elective treatments are being pushed to outside clinics where possible.

There is certainly some emotion involved with all of this, but there are also cold hard facts that provide support for the emotional arguments. 60k dead isn't a huge number in the grand scheme of things, but that number also takes into account the social distancing of the last month (nor does it count the high number of hospitalizations that don't result in death). People are still getting it even with shelter in place orders. That isn't a failing of the guidelines, that is a reality of a highly infection virus and people having essential needs (along with others not following guidelines) that force them to leave those shelters. It's still going to spread, but the idea is to slow the spread. That has been accomplished on some level through the efforts over the last month. We can't pretend like the numbers we have today are based on business as usual.

There is a short term (relatively speaking) economic impact to this that can't be ignored, but if you only focus on the lost jobs and hardships today then you miss the bigger picture. Without social distancing more people would undoubtedly be sick and in the hospital and out of work (and accruing expensive medical bills). More people would be dead and never working again. We are naturally risk averse people, and if all of this bad stuff happens then we will implement our own forms of social distancing at an individual level that will still eventually impact the economy.

Another thing to consider. Eventually the economy is going to have to re-open, but if it's done too soon then we may very well end up right back where we are today. Either with new shelter in place orders or a "screw it" mentality and see many thousands more dead or hospitalized. Ultimately making the sacrifices over the last month pointless and creating a new burden on the economy.

Government should just give most the 5.6 trillion directly to the people. Everyone under making less 100k gets 14K, and those over 100k get 7k, plus extra for having kids. Instead of trying to put a little money here and there and making people and business jump through hoops just to collect a small piece or take loans which they may likely default.

Exactly - it’s already been mentioned by someone in here, but this isn’t just happening in a vacuum. All the other medical **** that happens with humans doesn’t stop. We flood every hospital with explosions of COVID cases and now we’re making hourly decisions on what happens with the emergencies that are coming in that would usually need ICU care. I mean we’re probably headed for that at some point anyway, but the decision is at what point do we let it get there?

                Agreed.

I have a friend who had a heart attack almost 3 weeks ago with a 100% blockage of a main artery that they had to revive him 3 times with electrical shock.

He did go straight to ICU for more than a week and then was moved to a step down unit.

No family visits from his wife or 2 sons.

I'm assuming if it's life threatening like he had, you should be able to be hospitalized.

I thought that flu nonsense was put to rest a month ago.

Mortality rate (yes, wherever it lands folks) is much more devastating than flu.

I’ve worked through multiple flu seasons. Never have I seen something like this. One nursing home had 3 cardiac arrests (no breathing, no pulse, CPR in progress) going on at the same time.

The hospitals are down here are still bananas.

I think we are past that, but I would also hope we are well beyond the point of using ignorance to scare people into thinking that people of all ages are at a high risk of dying from this. 93% of the deaths in NY are people 50+, 86% had serious underlying conditions. And I'm sure people will want to throw that number away and say that, well, maybe all the non reported deaths are people in their 20s, but that is pure fantasy.

What’s considered a serious underlying condition?

Dub, I'm sure people that are following this CV are noting that serious issues with CV don't affect younger people, but I'm sure most people would also know that young people can easily transmit CV to that older than 50 population you noted.

                              .

I’ve also seen things like obesity and high blood pressure listed as underlying conditions too. Those and diabetes are incredibly common. Whether those statistics include stuff like that I don’t know.

There's zero argument that diabetes isn't a serious condition. Same with hypertension. Combine that with age and you have people who are the most at risk by the widest of margins.
