AD Alcorcon - '20-'21 Season
December/January Update
League Match 16
AD Alcorcon - Celta Vigo (2-2)
Morientes 16'
Calle Ochoa 65'
Farago 67'
Aguirre 89'
Recap: Gotta be honest here, couldn't help but sort of smile after Aguirre scored a beautiful chip shot over Bonilla. You see, Aguirre is an Alcorcon academy product that was sold to Celta a couple of seasons ago because there was a logjam at his position (LM) and he kept ending as the odd man out. But the Peruvian had potential to be special and he's obviously continued to develop (was at 71 OVR when sold for just under $2 million). So yeah, bitter-sweet result here. At least we were able to score twice against our former goalie (Ulreich).
CL - Group Stage, Match 6
Liverpool - AD Alcorcon (3-1)
Coady 6'
Morientes 37'
Coutinho 43'
G. Ramirez 82'
Recap: Welp, so much for revenge, Liverpool beat us by the exact same score the beat us the first time around and pretty much outplayed us again no matter how hard we tried. They make our defense look like crap. With this loss we would depend on whether Sporting won by a significant goal difference to find out whether we would move on as 2nd place from our group.
League Match 17
Rayo Vallecano - AD Alcorcon (0-3)
Lopez 36'
Correa 50'
Lopez 83'
Recap: Pleased to beat an opponent that always gives us fits, must be the Madrid thing. Lopez is putting himself among the league leaders in goals.
League Match 18
AD Alcorcon - Getafe CF (2-1)
Johansen 32'
Lopez 35'
Knoll 90+'
Recap: Phew, what a scare. Getafe got on the board first when a clear out by their keeper bounced in front of and over our last line of defense to the feet of a streaking Johansen who rocketed a left-footed shot from just outside the box to put the visitors ahead. Lopez evened it up just minutes later but our attempts to go ahead kept coming short throughout this game until Knoll, coming in as a sub in the last 10 minutes, outjumped 2 defenders on a corner kick to head the ball to the back of the net on what would be the last significant play of the game. 3 points are better than 1.
Copa Del Rey - Round of 32, 2nd Leg
Sporting Gijon - AD Alcorcon (1-3, 1-4 agg)
Juan Muniz 18'
Correa 32'
Farago 45'
Lopez 45+'
Recap: props to Gijon for giving it everything they had, when they scored that goal they put even more pressure on us, but eventually our superior talent made all the difference and the second half was spent mostly keeping the score the way it was. We move on to the Round of 16.
Copa Del Rey - Round of 16, 1st Leg
AD Alcorcon - RCD Mallorca (1-2)
Nsue 7'
Lopez 11'
Erik 19'
Recap: Mallorca shocked us with an aggressive approach during the whole game which also suffocated our attack. They put themselves in great position to advance if we don't make some serious noise in the 2nd leg.
JAN
Copa Del Rey - Round of 16, 2nd Leg
RCD Mallorca - AD Alcorcon (2-2, 4-3 agg)
Nsue 4'
Correa 15'
Erik 34'
Correa 70'
Recap: And after two consecutive Copa Del Rey Titles we are bounced from the cup this season before even reaching quarter finals. Nsue and Erik were once again the enforcers for a Mallorca team that deserves a lot of props for executing two nearly perfect games. Our best player tried his best to ruin the party for the hosts but in the end we were unable to get the one more goal we needed to move on. Unfortunately for Mallorca they would go on to be eliminated by Sevilla in the next round.
League Match 19
Atletico Madrid - AD Alcorcon (1-2)
Lopez 23'
Farago 41'
Taïder 77'
Recap: It was nice to get back on a track against a tough opponent, though Taïder's goal gave us a bit of a scare. Lopez continues to keep himself among the league leaders in goals.
League Match 20
AD Alcorcon - Real Betis (3-0)
Farago 31'
Farago 48'
Imada 87'
Recap: I don't think many Betis fans have good thoughts for us after we beat their team twice by a combined 8-1 score. The great form by Alessandro Farago may have lead to an interesting event in this transfer window ...
League Match 21
Celta Vigo - AD Alcorcon (2-2)
Aguirre 45'
Miguel 56'
Lopez 68'
Jimenez 73'
Recap: Admittedly I smiled again when Aguirre scored but I wasn't smiling at the end of this one in a game where we outshot Celta 14 to 3, 7 to 3 on shots on goal. Missing out on these points is likely going to come back to bite us when we don't win the league.
League Match 22
AD Alcorcon - RCD Espanyol (1-1)
Morientes 26'
Berko 82'
Recap: Wasn't able to put away a team trying to get out of the relegation zone, a team that also beat us earlier this season. When you take a look at my games against Espanyol and Celta I missed out 9 (NINE!) points. It's going to take a hell of a second half to the season to not have that hurt.

I know it's short-sighted but going back to the points I left on the table against Celta and Espanyol ... I'd be in 1st place if I had taken care of business against those two. 8 points back with 16 games to play isn't too bad but we can't keep missing out on points like that. This is putting us in position for must-win games against Barca and Real Madrid which isn't a great scenario. As predicted at least one of the big two is starting to break away from the pack and the 5-point difference between 1st and 9th place 2 months ago is now a 14-point gap. It'll be just 3 league games for us next month against Getafe, Rayo, and Bilbao. Luckily Sporting was unable to put a beatdown on Basel so we move on to the next round in Champions League. Our opponent in the Round of 16 will be: Chelsea, who beat us twice in the group stage last season. Oh those English teams keep giving me problems (ironic considering what I'm doing with Dagenham in my other CM).
Lost among all of this may be the fact that Juan Morientes has SHINED at RM replacing the injured Badile Salawu and it's likely that he has earned the starting gig at this point. After all he's an elite prospect and he's been showing it on the field. His only knock is lacking the statmina to play a full 90 minutes but we're hoping he'll continue to develop that. Salawu will very much remain a part of the rotation in our midfield when he comes back from injury (broken tailbone, out about 3 more months).
This time of the year also brought the winter transfer window in which some moves were made, as listed below:
TRANSFERS OUT: Bart Gorter (CAM, 72 OVR), loaned to AJax for the rest of the season. Patrick Sobiech (CDM, 71 OVR), loaned to RCD Espanyol for the rest of the season. Franco Flores (CB, 74 OVR), sold to Atletico Madrid for $2.5 million. Moritz Parker (ST, 68 OVR), loaned to Cordoba CF for the rest of the season. Nicola Lancini (LB, 75 OVR), included as part of a deal. In Sung Jo (RB, 76 OVR), included as a part of a deal.
TRANSFERS IN: Yerson Candelo (RB, ?? OVR), agree to pre-contract for 2 years and $20K wages. Cristian Ramirez (LB, 76 OVR), purchased from Düsseldorf for $2.3 million + Lancini. Mattia De Sciglio (RB, 85 OVR), purchased from Chelsea for $17.5 million + Jo.
Quick notes on these moves: loans for youngsters are obvious. Flores wanted to be part of a rotation at CB that we simply don't need at the moment. He wasn't happy being part of a B team that is being used less this season and wanted out. We have a lot of young talent at the position so good riddance. The agreement with Candelo is just an opportunity to bring in more competition for the backup RB job. He'll battle with McDermott next pre-season and the loser will most likely be sold. On the surface Ramirez may not seem like much of an upgrade over Lancini (only +1 on the OVR), but he brings elite speed and crossing to the position as well as better defending so he's definitely an upgrade. De Sciglio of course is the big acquisition here (and the guy both I referred to when talking to Simp and Keano), he's a top of the line upgrade at RB replacing the departing product academy (Jo) who was great for us but wasn't an elite prospect. These moves should both strengthen our defense and aid our offense. The only other significant event during this transfer window was the near-sale of Alessandro Farago. Palermo came in offering a significant amount of money for him and we countered with a high number ($40+ million) which they accepted. HOWEVER, days later Palermo informed us that Farago was unwilling to leave Spain because he loves it here and as such the deal was off the table. Bizarre, bizarre turn of events. We were ready to turn our profit right back into the acquisition of Rodrigo Villalva (you can read more about him towards the end of my previous update on the Argentina section - pg 814) or at worse promote Maximilian Knoll to a starter. Fortunately Farago understands that it was all business and there are no hurt feelings and we continue to move forward with the same goals.
As far as our academy is concerned we continue to track player progress. Here's the youth squad:
- Victor Jimenez (CM, 66-70 OVR, 86-92 POT): 17-year old from Spain described as an attacker. We're hopeful that he'll stick in the academy for the full season in order to give himself a better chance to be an impact player for us right away. A special talent.
- Mansour Haron (CB, 49-51, 85-91): 16-year old from Saudi Arabia who is physically strong, and when I say he's physically strong I mean that he's 6'6" and 198lbs. Oh yeah.
- Jacob O'Neill (RB, 53-57, 84-90): 16-year old from Australia who will more than likely play inside at CB due to his size (6'2") and lack of speed. He's described as defensive minded.
- Victor Velazquez (CAM, 62-66, 83-89): 17-year old Spanish prospect who reminds us of a young Leandro Paredes or Angel Correa. We want to keep him in the academy for another season.
- Jesus Aurello (ST, 53-57, 81-87): 16-year old from Mexico recently settled in as a striker. Described as technically gifted.
- Wasl Al Harbi (RB, 47-51, 80-86): 17-year old from Saudi Arabia who also projects as more of a CB due to his size (6'2") and lack of speed. He's also described as defensive minded.
- Luis Martinez (ST, 50-54, 77-83): 16-year old from Mexico who is described as technically gifted. We seemed to have over-projected his potential initially.
- Cameron Jones (LB, 47-51, 76-82): 16-year old from Australia who will also be playing inside due to lack of speed mostly. We'll see if we can develop him into a CDM/CB dual player.
- Victor Jimenez (CM, 58-62, 74-80): 17-year old from Venezuela who is a defensive-minded midfielder. He needs to remain in the academy for now but we're not sure he'll want to stay in it for another full season given his age.
- Johnny Wilson (CF, 54-58, 74-80):16-year old from England who scouts compare to Farago. We're hoping he'll stick with the academy for another full season.
- Diego Rodriguez (ST, 48-50, 74-80): 16-year old from Mexico described as technically gifted. He projects as more of a sub for us but we're still hoping to speed up his development.
- Julio Gutierrez (LW, 53-57, 73-79): 16-year old from Spain who brings some speed to the pitch. He's settled at LW which is a great fit for him but he showed very little improvement in the academy last season so another full year here would be the best for him.
- Mohammed Almeshaugeh (CB, 38-40, 72-78): 16-year old from Saudi Arabia described as physically strong. Another defender standing at 6'2" but he's really raw right now so a lot of development in the academy would be key for him.
- Francisco Miguel (CF, 51-55, 71-75): 16-year old from Spain described as technically gifted but needs to remain in the academy for at least one more season.
- Damon Elliot (CF, 51-55, 70-74): 16-year old from England who projects as a speedy attacker. His best shot at being a long-term consideration for us is to stay in the academy for one more season.
* Denotes recent addition to the academy.
Current Roster (* Denotes player graduated from the youth academy):
No games with Argentina these last 2 months (qualifiers will resume this month) so that's all for now (and for this year!). See ya!
