I also forgot to mention they central mids man mark me out wide frequently.
That match against France, Kante was on my shoulder frequently despite me standing by the touchline.

As usual, the gameplay is different in non-exhibition matches. Started a faux World Cup with the Azzuri and the CPU is a little more aggressive. They're not where I'd like them to be but they're better than Exhibition matches.

The CPU attack can get a little infuriating at times. The one-touch passes that and/or backheels that travel 10-15 yards are eye sores but the through ball over the top to the flanks irks me more for some reason, especially when the space between the attacker and the endline makes it impossible for a ball to be played like that. Even if the CPU gets to the ball all they can manage is a touch before it goes out for a goal-kick. They try to play so man balls in behind the defense instead of being patient and working it from side-to-side or simply just playing balls to feet out-wide. I wish they would just slow the hell down at times.

Did you notice any difference in the CB play? Them running away from their marks and letting forwards run free in the box is infuriating me. Not to mention them watching crosses come in and just standing around at times. I had a few last night that flew right over a defenders head and he did not even try to jump for it leaving it for me to head into the goal with Chicharito of all players.

I'm mainly a ML/Career mode type player, this game makes me want to go back to FIFA, hopefully the patch ML sooner rather than later then i'll go back to it.

Gameplay is great besides the fact I have to get use to getting my shot off a bit faster.

I only played one game, vs Ireland and they (my CBs) cut everything out. Ireland is one of those teams apparent that spams the high through ball and Barzagli/Bonucci weren't having any of it. Granted they are both like 85/86 overall but they seemed to always be in position.

I think part of the problem with through balls by the CPU is that there's a slight delay when you switch to the defender and it can cause a stutter which gives the attacker an extra step. That and the insanely high lines the back 4 implore, even if you set them deep, means there's too much space between them and your keeper, basically a inviting the pass.

I've been trying Matt's positioning fix, basically dropping players back as far as you can without changing their position. It helps with the through balls because 1) you're able to get more bodies in midfield making the CPU think twice about a risky pass ;2) your back line won't encroach on your midfield. They always leave space between the banks of four.

I'll see how it plays out. It was just one match so it could be placebo.

Well at ML problems with defending its not just player changing. Its also how opposition player lock better on ball/passes.

When you take control of your CB and mark opponent forward where CPU is going to pass, you cant always intercept pass (not even with Super cancel). Sometimes my CB slows down, sometimes completly stops when I try to mark FW or intercept the pass. Its not happening on every situation, but it will on every match.

Its frustareiting, because you read game right and antipaciate CPU pass beforehand, but game desides otherwise.

Re: PES 2018 Full Game Impressions

Been playing a ML with Southampton and man, it just feels bland. I am 4th having lost only one game of about 10. Playing all manual on Superstar. I really enjoyed 2017, I played about 12 seasons all in all, and while the game definitely had its flaws, i felt it was a much more balanced experience.

2018 is all about the dribbling and on the ball movement, which is fantastic, but Konami have chosen to focus on it to the detriment of all the other parts of a football match. There are less fouls, less out of bounds, less offside, no midfield to speak of, they basically eliminated any stoppage in play or anything that might disrupt the time dribbling the ball to highlight the thing they think will convert Fifa fans.

To me that is the big problem with PES currently, they have made some great strides the last few years technically but they have implemented them in a way that is geared towards cutting into FIFA's share of the market, namely the online amd FUT crowd. They have gotten away from what made PES PES, a simulation oriented representation with a steep learning curve, and player and team individuality at its core. They have chosen instead to try and do what FIFA does only less successfully, they have essentially become the Zune of football franchises.

This philosophy is evident in the release cycle. In an effort to beat FIFA to market they rush through a product that is severely flawed, let the consumers do the testing, use Adam Bhatti to do damage control on social media and only implement half fixes. There is no way some of the glaring flaws with 2018 make it through proper testing.

The beta was great, the E3 build was great, then they cocked it up with the demo and had no time to fix it. Adam has already said Master League is what it is, and I doubt any major changes or fixes are coming for online either. They can only play to people's nostalgia so much while delivering a product that is completely different to the legacy they say they are building upon. I can break it down with stats, the ridiculously high pass reception %, the number of cpu goals that come from lofted through balls, the success % of backheels, but it wont make a difference. Konami has chosen the road it wants to follow. If my choice is between FIFA and FIFA with less depth then I guess Im going back to FIFA, for the first time in 3 years.

Re: PES 2018 Full Game Impressions

This is simply an arcade title at this point...

17 was fun and with the slower gameplay I had hopes for 18 but there are far more goals this year than last. To be clear as long as you're on the appropriate difficulty level those goals will go in both directions. As has been stated the midfield is just a pass through and defenders are blind at times.

Even changing the controls to manual, in the end, leads to the same result...goal fest. For example in the first 8 matches in ML w Ath. Madrid (top player / 7.5 min halves) I had matches that ended; 4-2, 6-1, 7-3, 0-0, 1-0, 2-5, 5-3, 6-2. (My scores listed first.)

Intrestingly enough that scoreless match was a domestic cup, which for some reason are always hard and present good games. But its the goals that ruin the game...just look at those scores and that's only playing 7.5 min. halves...I usually prefer 10. When the ball is whipping around and the goals are going in it really feels more like a hockey game. No matter if you score or conceed you'll always know there's another goal just around the corner ...so who cares?

PES for years presented a game wherein you score a goal...there was a rewarding feeling and the reverse applied to being scored on. But it is now clear that Konami see this as a more "fun" arcade type game. Nothing wrong with that just don't expect this title to consistently produce a lifelike version of the game.

It's interesting how the Cup Games and derbies play such a better version of the game. Why isn't that the default gameplay?

I will say that if you check out Matt10s thread on workarounds for FBs not tracking back properly he's actually demonstrated that he can get the AI to play a pretty nice game. I'm curious why Konami doesn't take note (Matt you should nicely tweet at Adam and PES).

I think he's on the right path and I know that means heavy editing before starting a master league and that shouldn't be required, but if it works I'm in!

Yeah, I felt this playing against my friend. Played a few as Arsenal; could pass & move, interchange, and all that. Then played PSV/Ajax and I had no choice but to lump it up to de Jong & Locadia up top because my midfield & defenders didn't have the talent to pass the ball up the pitch consistently.

In my BAL save as Udinese, playing on both top player and superstar, I've matches 3-3, 4-4, 5-4, way more frequently than should ever happen.

Frankly, I'm at the point where I was last year. It'll be on the shelf for the forseeable future.

Last night I started a BaL save for the first time since 2014. It was really fun, at first. But then I realized that my AI players were always better than the AI players on the other team. No matter who the other team was. And we beat everyone, convincingly. As long as I was in the lineup. And then it just wasn't fun anymore.
