Re: Any FM-related questions? Ask them here

With FIFA virtually in the toilet as far as I'm concerned, I think now's the time to make the move, full time to FM. Right now I'm in the early stages of planning. As I do so I'm reading through the "Guide To Football Manager" in order to at least have a clue where to start. My biggest questions have to do with the setup.
      Some questions I have are:

      - Are the Champions League and Europa League participants chosen using only the leagues in my save(playable and non playable) or is it the full Monty so to speak.

      - How big of a database should I shoot for numbers wise if I'm looking for a long term experience.

      - Right now my plans are to include China, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, USA, Mexico, and the majority of European nations except for a few(Czech Repbulic, Slovakia, Serbia, Hungary, Iceland, Finland, maybe a few more). playable nations will include all of the top 10-20 in the world plus maybe a few more. Does this sound OK?

        1. You get the full European experience. It's fantastic.

        2. Large database if your computer can handle it.

        3. Good mix of locations. Once again, I would personally pick as much as your computer can handle.

There are also a number of add-ons you should get, such as real competition names, logos which makes the FM experience that much more authentic.

You will have a blast. I know it.

Agreed. I tend to ignore the stars in my computer performance and I run a lot of leagues and nations. The add ons are a must. They really enhance the game experience.

This game makes FIFA's career mode look amateurish. My other recommendation honestly would be to start as a big club to learn the ins and outs of the game as I said above. It really helps new players learn and it's always fun to play with a good team to start.

The joy I get from this game is watching your academy players develop into stars as a big club. I usually don't sign established stars as a rule because I like the development aspect. If you take the time to really develop and give your prospects lots of game time, they come good. There's something to be said about never having to worry about homegrown quotas when you develop a squad focusing money on signing the next big thing.

Oh yeah, I have the metallic logos, the name fix file, and the cut out face pack so I'm all good there. As for me he setup, I've loaded it down so that game speed is 2 stars and computer performance 5 stars, didn't want to go much lower than that to start.

If computer performance is 5 starts then you should be good.

So, when you're developing a player, is U18 or U21 game time worth anything? Or do they really need to pay at least some matches with the senior squad?

I need to upgrade my computer. I had a hard time loading up a save with 10 countries. So I'm currently only playing with England, N. Ireland, Rep. of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. And even with that my game is a little slow. And this computer is only two years old, but has small memory and a weak cpu. Its a work station for my job really. Not meant to play games at all. Didn't think I'd need so much for this game when I bought it.

I would look for something that has an intel i5 processor if you want to have a decent amount of countries to pick from.

I think they mean something for your average player but loans are the best way as well as some game time. If I have a high end kid, I tend to keep him and ensure he plays starts games for me depending on current ability. Obviously I won't bench someone like Ozil for a kid but I'd start him for cup games at least.

I like to have kids tutored and then loaned out when they hit 18-21. That's just me though. While they're 16-17 I can have them tutored to have better mental attributes as well as me developing specific abilities eg finishing.

I didn't know they sold stand alone processors. That should be good enough.

As the last few posts have been talking specs hope nobody minds me picking a brain or two.

Long time FM and its predecessor player (actualy played the very first one) but haven't played in last few years due yo time constraints. 13 was the last I bought. Thinking of getting back in now i have abit more free time. Especially as there seem to have been quite a few improvements in last few years and like a few others here am tiring of manager mode in FIFA on PS4.

Problem is I need to buy a new laptop as current one is on last legs and pretty old. I want to make sure it will run game to its full capabilities as its pretty annoying if things have to be turned off or down. For other things i need it for I have got it down to a few choices.

I have already decided to get either an I5 or I7 quad core processor ... so is I5 good enough or is 7 overkill.

Do i need a dedicated graphics card, if so nvidia or radeon or is the standard intel integrated good enough.

Is there any point having ssd drive. And/or will a large hard drive make the game run smoother. Most of my work stuff will be done using external hard drives so I won't be storing much on there.

Any other tips or suggestions gladly accepted as i need to buy this asap for work purposes. Sorry if its off topic but i cant find a definitive answer elsewhere. Thanks in advance.

Really depends on your price range and such. I would say you should be good with the standard graphics card and hard drive.

As for the processor, I feel the i5 should be solid enough. But if you want to have a crazy save with a ton of leagues going, I would probably go i7.

These are the minimums for 16:

The game runs fine on built in, or on board, cpu +apu/gpu setups. Its not graphics intensive. You just need some memory and a good processor. No actual graphics card is required.

I have this laptop now, and it runs great. Its just not powerful enough to run all the leagues at once in a timely manner. Its also my work laptop, so I shouldn't really be playing on it all that much.

I also have an almost 3 year old custom built work station with no graphics card, and cheap dual core amd cpu/apu. And it runs its fine with just a few leagues also. I only play in 2d mode though. Not sure how well 3d is on either system.

The reason I want to upgrade myself, is neither one of them is capable of doing a very large database quickly. I want to run as many leagues as possible. Which means a lot of players, and a lot of background processing.

An i5 is plenty powerful, and will be enough. Even the mobile version on my laptop is great. It blows my desktop out of the water. I just can't be using it all the time.
