    re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread

I'm happy with the win first and foremost. Pulisic is Pulisic as usual, and US Soccer is in great shape for years to come.

That being said, we'll get run out of Estadio Azteca if we repeat tonight's first half. Our back four had some good moments, but they were shaky way too often. I imagine Omar will start at CB Sunday, hopefully alongside Cameron. Brooks has flashes of greatness, but give me Cameron and Gonzalez Sunday. Brooks is way too hit or miss right now.

Less than 72 hours until USA/Mexico!!

Yeah, looked like it would be a draw at best the way they played the 1st half.

The way the US side looks now Mexico will have a relatively easy time Sunday night.

I loved that Arena pulled Dempsey off early. Obviously he was pissed, but that's just going to light a fire under him. Just watch Deuce let it all out against Mexico.

I will be shocked if the US gets a result on Sunday. You can't rely solely on Pulisic, who has either scored or assisted 7 of the last 8 goals the US has scored. (The 8th he drew a foul that led to a goal off the FK, lol).

I know Arena won't do it because it's Azteca and he'll play it safe, but I'd like to start seeing Acosta getting some starts in the defensive midfielder role. We need someone who will consistently be a thorn in someone's side. It's just not Bradley's game to do that. He spent the entire first half jogging around not closing anyone down. He does it a few times in the 2nd half (probably after getting his *** chewed out at halftime), and lo and behold it leads to the first goal. People griped about Beckerman all the time, but he was very effective in doing that. Jones is that guy too, but his time is coming to and end. If Mexico is going to be allowed to be comfortable on the ball in the midfield all match, they could end up embarrassing us.

I sure hope so, because he was pretty bad last night.

Naw, Deuce wasn't bad at all. He was part of the first goal where his one touch through ball to Nagbe set up Yedlin to pass to Pulisic. Before that he sent the through ball to Jozy who kicked the ball into the keepers midsection. He had a good shot on goal before that, and also crucially stole the ball from Williams, who was about ready to shoot.

It's impossible to have an objective conversation about Dempsey with you, lol. He did have a couple moments - I thought he had scored on that nice shot he had, but if we are to get a result on Sunday he either needs to not be in the starting lineup in favor of Bobby Wood or play much better.

Arena is basically the American version of Mourinho.

It's a big away game so he will park several busses and try to get out of Azteca with a point.

Dempsey slightly more than others, yes, sorry . But I'm naturally pretty positive towards most players. Dempsey not starting would be a joke though. It's a tough call where to put Bobby though as he is fantastic. I think it depends on which version of Jozy we get. Wood and Dempsey play pretty well paired up.

Maybe I'm being a big harsh on him, and it doesn't help that Jozy's always gonna be up in his space because he's always wanting to come deep to play with his back to goal. I just thought his link up play for the most part left a lot to be desired last night more often than not. He had some really bad touches and passes.

Agreed, he tries to take players on or nifty attempts at dribbling in tight spaces. 90% of the time, he is read like a book. He makes bad passes in bad spots as well.

I think Deuce needs to realize that's not his game. This isn't the 2006 world cup anymore. Those penetrating passes though are, and his ability to make space for himself to shoot. I think he and Nagbe connected quite well, but I think a player like Nagbe connects well with most players.

I think leaving Deuce on the bench would be idiotic though. He is the highest active goal scorer on the team. Those are the facts.

See? I can be objective about Deuce.

If we're gonna sit back, soak up pressure, and counter I'd rather have Wood and Pulisic out wide to run behind defenders. I'd rather have Deuce come on late to chase a goal or hold possession trying to protect a result.

                              It's entirely possible honestly.

If Arena is returning us to the old "greater than the sum of our parts" US style then organizing a solid defense capable of holding Mexico isn't out of the question.

Also, Mexico's biggest asset (Azteca) is also a weapon. Mexican fans are some of the worst in international play, and they turn on their team relatively quickly (ESPECIALLY at home) when things aren't going their way. I've seen plenty of times where Mexico is being held scoreless at the Azteca and their own fans start booing and whistling.

Basically, if we can make it through the first half without conceding then the Azteca will turn on Mexico pretty quickly in the second half.

Imo it's definitely doable as long as we are disciplined.

He wasn't very good, and I'm betting he'd admit that himself. If he had scored a goal or two and had a great game, he wouldn't have been half as mad as he was when he subbed.

That being said, a feisty Dempsey should make for a very focused and strong Dempsey Sunday night.
