Hoping Gregg swallows his pride and all that "doesn't fit my system" (which is crap anyways) nonsense and brings John Brooks in. Not saying Brooks is the answer, but he's a better option than the current pairings. I realize this will never happen though.

Gregg "My unsuccessful system is more important than calling up our best CB and the only striker scoring in Europe" Berhalter.

Beginning to doubt whether he could halt a bear at all.

What Frank Leboeuf says is 100% correct! The pay-to-play system has to change or the US will never be a top soccer nation. And I don't see that happening with how capitalistic our society has become.

We’ve discussed this a lot here, but yeah it’s a huge problem that is harder to solve than it should be

Yeah I wouldn’t even know where to begin on that one. I’m just a dude who posts on internet message boards.

But I do feel Ricardo Pepi’s services would have been useful in this World Cup. Also, would definitely try to cap Flo Balogun (Arsenal player, on loan, US eligible) ASAP.

Sadly that even has an impact on basketball, just not in the same way. For US soccer its very much a closed system, but for basketball it becomes exploitive where amateur coaches treat players almost like a commodity to be sold.

I like what Mark pointed out also. Our mid to upper class kids and military brats are too prim and proper

I honestly don't see that as the issue. It might be a surface level sign of an underlying problem, but it's not THE problem.

Curious what you think the underlying problems are then? Other forms of political-type issues? I'm trying to understand some of the problems with US Soccer. I think pay-to-play is a surface level problem like you said; however, the underlying problem is that many (most?) Americans are hardwired to do whatever they can to extract the most money out of any situation. Seems like many of the best coaches sit behind these "pay walls" because that's how they have the best facilities, free travel to exotic places for tournaments (subsidized by parent costs), etc. Maybe a cynical take from me, but it's hard to look the other way.

On a positive note though, most of the MLSNext academies are now free or nearly free for anyone that makes a club. That's a huge step in the right direction for US Soccer.

It's across all youth sports unfortunately. The market is projected to hit $77.6 billion by 2026...let that sink in. That kind of money isn't generated from Little League, AYSO, American Legion, YMCA, and the other leagues those of us over 30 grew up with.

It’s not THE problem, but there isn’t really one major problem, more like a number of problems that all need to be solved before we can really push higher.

Pay to play is definitely a big problem that serves to hold us back in the youth development department

The problem is money, at least in my corner of the world. I can only go by what I've experienced volunteering around my area with the youth programs, but they all lack any sort of real funding. The parks where parents played their games are no longer serviceable because cities have stopped trying to maintain parks to a higher standard. Multi-use fields/stadiums are falling by the way side for more specific stadiums, and some places won't allow soccer on their High School Football Fields anymore. Referees are also a choke point, as parents are still very good at chasing them off, and the pay is the same as it was when i was a referee over 20 years ago. From my own personal experience there are more kids than ever that want to try and play soccer, we just don't have the infrastructure available to actually get them to stick with it. I can't imagine what it was like earlier in the summer when a team of U10s had to travel to two different fields to play a game simply because maintenance hadn't made it to those fields by 10am.

This is of course are all financial issues that exist before talking about the fact that some kids parents can't even afford for them to play. I encourage y'all to help out with youth soccer though, and there are many pathways to do so, I do a lot of volunteer coordinating fields/refs and set-up, but I got started on this path just by talking to some coaches and donating a boots for kids to play in. So, yeah, get involved! (or don't, I'm not your boss)
