Shrug, I'm honestly never gonna try and convince you, but after the Bellingham comments, and after this fiasco, it's beginning to really feel like Gio is at that fork where he can become a great player, or he can become Bendtner. Mind, Bendtner still had an arguably 'good' career, but at some point the problems don't become worth the talent. I'm hopeful that Gio has the right people behind him though and everyone can move past this.

Re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
Maybe someone can direct me to an article about this Gio affair. What I'm reading is the kid dogged it in practice. He says the coach told him before the tournament that he would play a limited role. So what's the real deal?Comment

Re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
I agree when talking about role players, but not one of the top 5 players in the squad. Nobody can convince me that Gio shouldn't have had a larger role considering the other options we had. What makes it worse, Berhalter went with the crappy options when he could've used Gio to capitalize on situations (Wales and England).
He sees other countries choosing to leave superior talent on the bench in order to fit a system or formation, and thinks he can do the same, perhaps...
but nothing really excuses not playing the guy as a real sub.
That being said, Gio hasn't done anything to excuse acting like a spoiled brat.
I would have liked to see McKennie swapped for Gio...a 4231 might have had more teeth in attack. McKennie had a pretty good tournament, though, I'm not saying otherwise, though he did seem to provide very little in the attacking third.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

Re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
If what Ream says is even remotely true, then Berhalter needs to be gone already. First he let this "non-story" leak as something bigger then lied about a team vote.
I have no reason to think Ream is making this up because he's time on the international team is likely done based on his age. He has nothing to lose at this point.Comment

Re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
I’m old enough to remember when it came out that one of the players was sleeping with another player’s wife. This seems tame lolComment

Re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
Anyone who is a history buff (particularly US Civil War) see a parallel between Burhalter and George McClendon?
McClendon was great at building and training the Army of The Potomac but as a battlefield general wasn't great and ultimately was replaced.
Burhalter did great at recruiting young talent to the squad, but as a matchday coach maybe not great.Comment

Fwiw, I don't consider myself a history buff, but I'm more on the side of tales that commend McClellan's acumen as a tactician, though like many unknowns, I assume the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I do appreciate the general philosophy of "Never fight a battle without something worth the probable loss"
Anyway, I can see where you're going with it, and generally I agree, I have admitted before that I'm probably softer on Berhalter than just about anyone with internet access, but I'd still rather someone new takeover the project that lies ahead.Support Local Sports

I assume you mean McClellan, but for this to work, that means Earnie Stewart(Lincoln) and him would have to dislike each other, or maybe Brian McBride. I still don't really know what either of them do in this structure.

But yeah I'm in the same boat. I'm also more favorable to him than most and think he did a terrific job rebuilding the squad but maybe now we need a Ulysses to take overComment

Re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
I think Berhalter did a great job recruiting, especially regarding the players who had the choice to play for other countries. Tactically I don't think he did a terrible job either; however, his system looks overly reliant on a true number nine or at least someone who can hold up play while the likes of Pulisic, Weah, Musah, etc. make runs into the seams and gaps.
I think Berhalter's squad management needs a lot of work. Other than a handful of selections, the overall WC roster was good. The starting XI selections and substitutions left me baffled throughout the tournament. For example, how do you play a guy in the KO rounds who didn't have an appearance in the group stage? Also, Berhalter knows during tournament football your back line needs to handle pressure, but he starts Zimmerman over CC-V during three of four games.Comment

Re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
So long story short, Berhalter kicked his wife 30 years ago, and someone brought it to US Soccer in an attempt to blackmail him. US Soccer then investigated Berhalter, basically to ensure he was not abusive to anyone in the organization. There are three tweets here, first Gregg with his own story, second from US Soccer talking about the investigation, and then Roger Bennett of Men in Blazers stating that it sounds like an assistant from Berhalter's staff will be taking the January camp duties, but none of this precludes Berhalter from still being the manager when competitive fixtures happen.
To note: with Luchi Gonzalez headed to San Jose, I think it's just Anthony Hudson and BJ Callaghan that could take the January camp.Support Local Sports

The internet didn't stay in the "who is trying to drag down Berhalter" phase for long, they've already went all in on Reyna as a devious blackmailer smh.Comment

Slight distinction. Berhalter is not under contact as of 12/31, so they kinda had to name someone to be there for the famous yearly January Camp. It’s going to be Hudson.
This is all such garbage pettiness. At this point I’d like it if they just moved on and do a full search.Comment
