He's our record scorer with something like 4 goals in 5 tournaments. Looking at the numbers isn't enough, it's only through the media being unable to accept his poverty of good performances for England that people think he has been any good. He hasn't and now the english media are taking note.

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
Screw form or any other metric, Vardy should start based on confidence alone. That man is suffering from JR Smith syndrome*, and a lot of the time that audacity gets rewarded. Vardy is overflowing with confidence and England need to take advantage of that.

Before Rooney's injury he had something like 7 in 9 games so his form certainly picked up. Obviously because he's injured he shouldn't go straight back into the team but he should still be brought because he's experienced and the captain. You won't see the Germans leaving Schweinsteiger at home, even though he's had a poor enough season albeit with injuries etc.Comment

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
Vardy and Welbeck could be used out wide, as could Sturridge while a case could be made for Rooney at no.10 and at a stretch, Kane. He could certainly bring all 5 and not bring an extra winger like Walcott or Ox.Comment

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
True, England failed in the golden generation. But Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes etc all turned up in tournaments. Rooney never did, he scored in a major tournament for the first time in 8 years at Euro 2012 and didn't even score a World Cup goal until 2014. It doesn't irritate me that he's failed as a player for England as I don't care for the national team much, but he has had a handful of decent games for England and 14 years into his career only now is his place in the England team being questioned.

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
Let's see how Leicester's not world class players are performing tonight. Kante scored, Vardy scored (again), Drinkwater is the best player of the match even though he's not playing in his natural position.

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
The role he had especially in the 1st half was completely different than the one in Leicester. He's not just a defensive shield type of player. Natural position is the specific position+role a player's used to play in most of his career. If you put a pure CB in the LB position is it still his natural position? He's still in defense...Comment

History! Lionel Messi's goal (30') makes him the 2nd Argentine with 50 international goals.Comment
