He's our record scorer with something like 4 goals in 5 tournaments. Looking at the numbers isn't enough, it's only through the media being unable to accept his poverty of good performances for England that people think he has been any good. He hasn't and now the english media are taking note.

If you're going off of form, Vardy and Kane should be starting with either Welbeck or Rooney on the bench.

Screw form or any other metric, Vardy should start based on confidence alone. That man is suffering from JR Smith syndrome*, and a lot of the time that audacity gets rewarded. Vardy is overflowing with confidence and England need to take advantage of that.

*JR Smith syndrome is where you never find a shot you don't like.

Rashford no. Vardy/Kane/Welbeck yes. And this is as someone who thinks the world of Sturridge. But that leaves Rooney 5th choice. You don't rotate 5 strikers at a tournament.

Think it's more like 6 in 5 tournaments and you could say arguably he wasn't fit for the '06 World Cup, he missed the first two group games of Euro 2012 with suspension (and scored in the third). Now he hasn't performed well enough but neither has any other English player in the so called "Golden Generation". All the blame shouldn't be put on Rooney.

Before Rooney's injury he had something like 7 in 9 games so his form certainly picked up. Obviously because he's injured he shouldn't go straight back into the team but he should still be brought because he's experienced and the captain. You won't see the Germans leaving Schweinsteiger at home, even though he's had a poor enough season albeit with injuries etc.

Vardy and Welbeck could be used out wide, as could Sturridge while a case could be made for Rooney at no.10 and at a stretch, Kane. He could certainly bring all 5 and not bring an extra winger like Walcott or Ox.

True, England failed in the golden generation. But Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes etc all turned up in tournaments. Rooney never did, he scored in a major tournament for the first time in 8 years at Euro 2012 and didn't even score a World Cup goal until 2014. It doesn't irritate me that he's failed as a player for England as I don't care for the national team much, but he has had a handful of decent games for England and 14 years into his career only now is his place in the England team being questioned.

To be fair, he scores quite a few in the qualifiers for the tournaments he just never can in the tournament itself, whether it be because of injuries or form, bad luck etc. I reckon this will be his last major tournament, at a stretch the World Cup as Kane, Welbeck, Sturridge and another young striker or two will definitely be ahead of him in the pecking order at that time.

Let's see how Leicester's not world class players are performing tonight. Kante scored, Vardy scored (again), Drinkwater is the best player of the match even though he's not playing in his natural position.

The role he had especially in the 1st half was completely different than the one in Leicester. He's not just a defensive shield type of player. Natural position is the specific position+role a player's used to play in most of his career. If you put a pure CB in the LB position is it still his natural position? He's still in defense...

History! Lionel Messi's goal (30') makes him the 2nd Argentine with 50 international goals.
