Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
I actually looked it up after I posted that. They played in that FA Cup match in December 2012, but played again twice within 2 months in 2014. The Captial One Cup 1st round and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy 2nd round.Comment

Hibs win their first Scottish Cup since 1902. Hibs celebrate by...

And Rangers are charging Hibs fans with assaulting their players in that scrum, which the Scottish FA is investigating why there was such a breakdown in security.
As a Rangers fans, the only thing that was assaulted was James Tavernier. Amazing going forward...couldn't defend to save his rear.
Oh well, no European football for Rangers next year will probably be for the best, that way we can focus on consolidating our squad for the Premiership next season.Comment

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
Conte leaves Sebastian Giovinco out of Euro 16 squad, stating: ‘If you choose to go and play there then you can pay the consequences’. Speaking about the MLS. Hes saying he didn't pick Giovinco because he plays in MLS, and not in Italy. What kind of crap is that? I feel bad for the guy. Hes been amazing for Toronto.

Speaking to Italian daily Tuttosport, Conte revealed he would have done the same thing Giovinco chose to do, not only for the financial factors in play — Giovinco’s TFC contract will reportedly pay the 27-year-old north of $7 million per year — but also for the fact he sees the North American game as a steadily improving place for players to ply their trade.
Translation via MLSsoccer.com:
“What else should he have done? In a few years players will elbow each other to go there. [MLS] will grow so much, and not just in terms of chatter.
“According to the latest surveys young Americans between six and 12 years old don’t choose the traditional sports like basketball and football, but they pick soccer. If they [North America] go down that road, pretty soon there’s going to be problems for everyone.”
Conte doesn’t seem all that bothered by the idea of Giovinco — or, perhaps one of his more regular national team players — signing with an MLS team. MLS is obviously on the steady incline, while Serie A clubs have seen their reputation plummet in recent years.Comment

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
I don't think he's actually crapping on the MLS. Pirlo has been pretty poor, there's basically no reason to take him. Giovinco has been amazing, but he had almost 5 seasons in Italy where he was well below par. The MLS is getting much better, but it's still far off the pace compared to the top leagues. Take any team, even the relegation teams, out of La Liga/Serie A/Bundesliga/Prem and they would romp the MLS. The best MLS teams are basically mid-table Championship quality.
It's not a great statement, but technically Conte isn't wrong. Besides, who would you even displace?Comment

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
Pirlo didn't deserve a call up - his time in the national team should be done. However, that's a lazy excuse he gave for Giovinco. Better than just coming out and saying you don't like him I guess. There are a few in their squad I'd take him over.Comment

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
Thing is, Giovinco isn't a midfielder (they already have SeS and Candreva listed as midfielders just to fit them in the squad) so he'd have to go as a forward. Insigne is light years ahead of Giovinco and probably first starter, second/third is probably Zaza/Immobile, so that means Giovinco would be competing for either the 4th or 5th forward spot, at which point it hardly matters. Pelle and Eder are both performing well in much better leagues, not to mention Pelle offers something Giovinco can't.Comment

Re: The Beautiful Game Thread
I agree that he wouldn't be starting. He can play attacking mid or forward, though. No question about that.
I'm just saying the time Conte did call him up last year, he came off the bench to spark their comeback win that secured the group. Then he got on a plane, got basically no sleep, and did this, which qualified Toronto for the playoffs.

Surely they could use someone in his form/shape coming off the bench. Isn't that the type of player you want coming off the bench in tournaments like this? It's not like Italy has been setting the world on fire since that final...Comment

His hometown, which is where he was when he was abducted, is one of the most dangerous places in Mexico.
Cartels pretty regularly kidnap wealthy people for ransom money and they end up ok. The weird thing about this, and reason a lot of people were nervous was because professional players are generally not messed with, especially Mexican national team players. Too high profile, plus even the cartels love their national team.Comment
