    Re: The Beautiful Game Thread

Class of '92 and their travails during their first season running their football club, Salford City F.C. 2nd episode ends at roughly the 56min mark or so, so don't be fooled by the extra long run-time. Apparently, a new season is coming out as well.

I really enjoyed watching this one as you can see what happens in non-league football and how things are run. Makes me wish Football Manager eventually allows you to become an owner!

Can't find a video that I can embed, but Robbie Keane scored a nice goal and got an amazing standing ovation when he came off after about an hour in his final Ireland match. Really cool scenes.

68 goals in 146 appearances, now joint fourth with the great Gerd Muller for Europe's highest scorer.

We'll never have a player like him again. Deserved every bit of that ovation and more. Legend.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was among a number of top coaches who discussed the possibility of scrapping extra time.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea? Wouldn't this just result in more teams time killing and playing for the draw if they know games will go directly to penalties rather than extra time?

I understand the fatigue argument but it's not like games are never determined in extra time. I think you want to avoid going to penalties at all costs.

Doesn't make much of a difference in my mind. Kind of like the idea actually. I'd take an exciting end to the 90 minutes then penalties over watching a bunch of exhausted players try to play 30 more minutes. You'd also see less sitting of usual starters if the managers knew there wasn't a possibility of totally burning them out for the upcoming weekend.

You mean less sitting of starters during the weekend just before a European game right? Honestly I'm kind of ok with it. Gives the manager more of a challenge, gives hungry players who might be on the fringes of first team a chance to prove a point.

I dunno, that's probably just me.

Then again, ever since Carlo brought over the Milan Labs people Chelsea has had an unreasonably low injury rate so maybe I've just sort of lost touch with reality.

Enner Valencia has this warrant out in Ecuador for unpaid child support. The police talked to him ahead of their qualifier and agreed to take him in after the match.

So Valencia faked an injury in the 82nd minute to get carted off and whisked away by an ambulance. The scene of the police running after the cart is straight out of a Keystone Cops movie.

The best part is he owes 17k in child support, which despite being a lot of money, isn't even a full weeks pay for him.

Pretty sure he's on like 50k per week

I don't know how fast that cart is going, but the cops don't look like they're trying hard enough to catch him.

So a quick update on Valencia:

Apparently Valencia isn't a comedic scumbag, but the mother of his child is. Basically, he gave her about half a million USD already in child support, and she proceeded to live a super flashy lifestyle with it, often abandoning the child for lengthy periods of time (apparently there are also pictures of her on porn sites where you can see the daughter in the background), and THEN asked for an additional 30k per month on top of that.

Enner filed for sole custody of the child and won, and has the child living with his parents while he gets everything set up for the kid to come live with him in England.

The police are involved because of the mother, who is desperately trying to prevent the kid from leaving the country since it means she wouldn't be able to get any more money out of him.

Also, Valencia is doing all this despite the fact that this whole thing was a one-night-stand. Actually sounds like a pretty standup guy. The second he found out the mom was treating the child so poorly he immediately got custody and started preparing things.

                                This is awesome.

Morecambe supporters pay manager Jim Bentley’s £1,000 FA fine

Morecambe supporters have paid the £1,000 sum of fines and costs charged to the manager Jim Bentley by the Football Association for improper conduct. He had been sent to the stands during the League Two club’s defeat against Cheltenham Town in December because of his reaction to Alex Kenyon’s red card.

Bentley’s reaction also led to a two-match touchline ban and he has been warned about his future conduct. Bentley was not in the dugout for Morecambe’s 4-1 win over Notts County on Saturday. Supporters collected money during the match and upon receiving the cash Bentley, who has managed the club since 2011, was reduced to tears.
