De Gea had a fundamentally good match?!!? SOUND THE TRUMPETS!

Good fundamental match is expected of every PL keeper. Disagree with the bold. Most PL keepers would have kept a clean sheet, IMO.

Re: The 2014-15 EPL Discussion Thread

United fans are kind of getting carried away with this De Gea nonsense.

He is a phenomenal shot stopper, and is very average (for a top level keeper) at everything else. There is a difference between being a top level shot stopper and a top level keeper.

Look at Courtois, that's a top level keeper. Amazing shot stopper, distribution is flawless, command of his box and positioning during crosses is perfect. He's made a SINGLE mistake all season and it was the very first league game he played in.

It's funny because the argument that goalkeeping is much more than just shot stopping has been used against keepers like Guzan, Mannone etc; there is more to keeping than shot stopping, it's easier to focus on making great saves when you are constantly under fire, a lot of shots are straight at them and anybody should save those, and so on. But, as soon as the Manchester United keeper starts doing the exact same thing, all those points are all of a sudden ignored and he's dubbed a top 3 keeper.

De Gea is an amazing shot stopper, probably one of the best in the world, but in terms of being a complete goalkeeper he barely makes top 3 in his league, let alone the entire world.

You United fans need to take a breath.

As a united fan im not all up in the heavens with de gea, but he has come up big when needed especially when the defense as been mediocre.

I agree courtois is a great keeper but its hard to really see his true talent when you have that chelsea defense in front of him not letting any easy shots get through

That's one of the things that makes a great goalkeeper, having nothing at all to do for more than half the game and then all of a sudden being counted on to make one monster save.

Believe it or not, it's a lot easier to make saves when you are constantly under fire. You don't have any time to think, you don't need to worry about anything but making saves. When you are in a really good team, you have all the time in the world to think, while you stand there in the cold just waiting.

Neuer is the best keeper on the planet, and he isn't required to make anywhere near the amount of saves De Gea or even Courtois is.

That sounds so dumb to read, but as a former keeper I def agree.

Not even top 3 in his league? Keep the haterade flowing. I'll take the pro's opinions (current and former) when it comes to a proper assessment of a player. Check the stats, he's been catching 92% of crosses into his box (more command). His distribution has always been one of the better aspects of his game. He is starting to talk in English more often, which in turn, should, allow him to better organise his defence that is constantly changing every week due to injuries.

I'm not even touting the guy as the best ever. I'm saying he's a big reason for keeping a clean sheet against Liverpool and has been immense this year. Of course, I don't expect the opinion of the ABU fanbase to be much complimentary.

De Gea is the best player on a team ranked 3rd in the EPL right now, that's good enough for me.

Don't think it's a great idea. Say a team has a CL game on Wednesday and are scheduled for Friday?

Could end up like the NFL where the Thursday night games are crap. However, money talks and folks will ante up for those Friday night games.

Yeah you wont have to worry about that. Pretty sure it will be like all other leagues were it's done to protect those in Champions League.

I am certain those fixtures will be re-arranged in that case. Serie A, Bundesliga and La Liga all have Friday fixtures and are able to work through those issues. I'm all for more football. Get off at 3pm, head to the pub and get hammered on a pint of Guinness and couple shots of Johnnie Walker on a Friday?? Yes please!!!

Villa is usually beyond abysmal vs United, so of COURSE it would be them to snap United's win streak

Also bad call on the Agbonlahor red card, that's just a hard 50/50 challenge. Yellow at most.

Hell, Young actually goes in to that challenge more recklessly than Gabby with studs up. Gabby gets to that ball 1 second sooner and Young possibly breaks Gabby's leg.

Derby day here tomorrow, barring a decent run in the FA Cup, this is now the most important fixture of the season for us. Lost 3 on the bounce to those ****s and a fourth is just not worth thinking about. Potential for trouble off the pitch too. Been violent bursts the past two seasons...so what do Northumbria Police decide to do... "Sunderland fans will not be escorted by police from Central Station to St James Park and will be free to visit any establishments in the city." Personally I think that is the dumbest idea possible.

But hoping for a win on the pitch, Colback with a 90th minute winner...either that or we tank those mackem bastards 4 or 5-0 haha! But no matter what, a win is all we'll accept tomorrow. Gonna be gutting if we lose, 4 days before Christmas too haha.

View from my seat at SJP...love this place.
