It's a real shame that Rooney will always have that weird cloud over him where there's this weird sentiment that he didn't live up to expectations, like we should be disappointed he ended up being just a generational talent instead of an other-worldly talentSupport Local Sports

Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
His problem was that he was an exceptional all-around talent, so he could be thrown into multiple positions and play well.
If he had the luxury of playing his preferred position his entire career, I think he would have been even better than he was, which is pretty crazy to think about.
SAF was an incredible manager, we will probably never see that again in this sport, but arguably the only knock against him in his career is that his use of Rooney as a utility player prevented him from reaching his full potential.
I've been aboard this train for a while lol. Rooney WAS an other-worldly talent.Comment

It's hard not to think about though tbh.

Yeah I think the only knock on Rooney was fitness issues later on. He got a lil chubby but one thing that goes unnoticed is how unselfish he was. He frequently made way for guys Bernatov, RVP, Zlatan, Tevez, etc... to play in those 9 roles but when he had a chance to play as 9 he killed it.

Ashley Barnes with another typical tackle of his. And then instantly subbed off.Comment
