Anyway yeah, like I said, Matic fills a hole in your squad you desperately needed to fill. Not sure why we are all of a sudden totally cool with selling players to rival clubs but whatever.

Only justification I can see is that perhaps we thought it was better for you to spend 40m on 29 year old Matic rather than 40-50m on some young dude who is going to end up being better.

Either way, I'm still pretty sure this will end up being a repeat of Arsenal selling you RvP.
They'll start counting once they take some of that ABU hate.

It's always refreshing, albeit surprising, when the title contenders sell to each other in the EPL. It happens a lot in other leagues, so there's that bit of fascination when it happens here. A few more Chelsea players and we can truly claim our London fandom.

Reports put the figure at ~£35m, with performance incentives for a further £5m; may be high for his age, but if Matic can help deliver a title, it's well worth it. If he's able to perform up to Carrick's age, that'd be a good bonus.

He likely won't have too many years left in him because of the type of player he is, but like RvP he's got enough for probably 2 title runs which would be plenty.

It's a pretty typical Jose signing. Immediate results now and plan for the future later or possibly never.

        Re: The Transfer Thread

It's so funny to me that Barca is crying to UEFA about the potential Neymar sale when they bought him amidst all types of shadiness.

With that core getting up there:

        Messi - 30
        Suarez - 30
        Iniesta - 33
        Busquets - 29
        Pique - 30
        Rakitic - 29
        Masch - 33
        Alba - 28

and virtually no stud young players (maybe Munir) they better hit for the cycle with the money off the sale.

I'd say they have plenty studs in their younger group.

Umtiti, Samper, Roberto, Gomes, Ter Stegen, Rafinha, Digne and Munit would all get into most top flight teams in Europe.

I'll give you Umtiti and Ter Stegen but the rest are squad players. Those others guys wouldn't touch a first team spot for any top flight team in Europe.

            City, Chelsea, United, Liverpool, Spurs
            Bayern, Dortmund
            Atletico, Real
            Juve

Hell, Ter Stegen probably wouldn't start over Thibo, Da Gea, Lloris, Neur, Oblak, Navas, Buffon

Tbf KG, if PSG end up paying Neymar's release clause the way it's being reported, then Barca really isn't wrong to complain.

The way we did things was controversial and most people hate us for it, but we still did everything on the books and all purchases were made by Chelsea. Using a freaking government to buy players so you can keep purchases off your books is next level shady.

Either that shouldn't be allowed to happen or UEFA needs to abolish FFP entirely and start over.

Good lord, it's actually happening. 222 million Euro. Absurd.

I'm so tempted to say "That's it! Football's finally broken!" but I've got a feeling this will be repeated for an even bigger fee within the next decade.

The only players Jose has bought/brought over 25 have been Mkhitaryan, Zlatan and Matic; the spine of the team is quite young, so I wouldn't say he's not planning for the future.

Oh, football's definitely not broken, as this kind of fee will be extremely few and far between. But it definitely is patently absurd. It's like they're daring UEFA to bring out the FFP "sanctions".

Just like 2009 when Madrid went on a buying spree and started this insane inflation in fees, you can bet this transfer will do the same. Squad players will sell for Ronaldo-type fees sooner or later.

Imo the one that is going to break everything will be Mbappe.

Neymar is a proven world class player, still young, probably the third or fourth most marketable footballer on the planet etc. The fee is nuts but you are getting a lot for it.

If somebody pays 180m for an 18 year old with just a single good half-season, imagine what clubs are going to start asking for their proven players.

Madrid didn't cause inflation, the events of the year before caused inflation when the value of money globally went to ****.

Clubs can ask all they want. There are still only a handful of clubs in the world that can finance these kind of deals. Typically it all scales to the buyer in the end. Unless, of course, you're Bayern who get away with robbery in plain daylight every year.

I'm sure Florentino is already on it. Can't have some upstart from Qatar by way of Paris upstage Madrid as the stage for big players!

Glad we got Pogba last year. This year is making his fee look like a bargain all of a sudden.

Not really, Pogba's value wasn't going to go up. Juve have showcased since he left that he wasn't as valuable to them, whereas Neymar is immensely valuable to Barca as the future main player in the team. Hence the €222m release clause, which was probably lower than they'd have wanted to include.
