~ The Historic Age ~ A Montreal Canadiens Dynasty (NHL10)

Canadiens Prepare for Season without Koivu, Kovalev
By Shawn P. Roarke - NHL.com Managing Editor

MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens may have lost long time team captain Saku Koivu and high flying winger Alexei Kovalev to free agency, but they hope that with Mike Cammaleri, Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta, it won't matter.

Former Canadiens General Manager and defensemen Bob Gainey has been fired after losing inspirational center Saku Koivu and scoring winger Alexei Kovalev. They will also be without defensemen Mike Komisarek, who left for rival Toronto Maple Leafs.

They acquired Anaheim Ducks center Travis Moen, who is expected to take a bottom 6 role in the Canadiens lineup. Disgruntled winger Sergei Kostitsyn seems to be on his way out of Montreal, but according to new General Manager Pierre Gauthier, he's going nowhere anytime soon.

Dominic Moore and Maxim Lapierre will be battling for the third line center position and an oppurtunity to play on a line with Benoit Pouliot and Sergei Kostitsyn, who's brother, Andrei Kostitsyn, plays left wing on the 2nd line.

Mathieu Darche and Travis Moen will play with either Dominic Moore or Maxim Lapierre on the 4th line. Roman Hamrlik and Andrei Markov top the first defensive line, with Markov taking over the Captaincy for the Canadiens, becoming only the 2nd European born player to become Captain of the Montreal Canadiens.

Marc-Andre Bergeron and Jaroslav Spacek will be playing on the 2nd defensive line with Josh Gorges and Hal Gill finishing on the bottom two. Glen Metropolit, Ryan O'Byrne and Tommy Pyatt will start the season off as healthy scratches.

Watch for winger Max Pacioretty, center Benjamin Maxwell and defensemen PK Subban to be called up to the National Hockey League in case of injuries or poor play.

Scott Gomez and Hal Gill will take the two Assistant Captain spots on the roster, with Brian Gionta as a spare captain in case of Gomez and Gill. Jaroslav Halak will start off the season October 1st in Toronto, Ontario against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

GOMEZ'S TWO GOAL NIGHT STUNS LEAFS

Scott Gomez played a great night to win the Canadiens the game.

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs have been having a hard couple of years, and it looks like the slide will continue. The Montreal Canadiens took down long time rival Maple Leafs with a 4-1 win over the Canadiens.

The Canadiens started off the scoring with a breakaway goal by Scott Gomez, who roofed the puck top shelf over the glove hand of Leafs goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

Early in the 2nd Period, Phil Kessel gathered a rebound off Jaroslav Halak from the original shot by Nikolai Kulemin. Georges Laraque scored an unexpected goal only 34 seconds after Kessel's goal.

Laraque took a hard slap shot towards Giguere's fivehole, which he accidentely knocked behind him and into the goal, giving the Canadiens a 2-1 lead. The Habs never looked behind.

Scott Gomez arranged another breakaway, stealing the puck from defensemen Francois Beauchemin, dangled the puck and then roofed the puck on the backhand. In the third period Mike Cammaleri took home the last goal off a one timer pass from Scott Gomez.

Game Summary
