Re: This Fire is Out of Control - Calgary Flames BaGM

Off-season report

After the Flames were eliminated from the playoffs, we sat down with Flames GM Craig Conroy to discuss the season and his off-season plans.

Question: With the season finally over, how would you rate the performance of your club?

Conroy: Well, it's always disappointing when you get knocked out, so we can't exactly label this season a complete success. But, we made a lot of progress this year to get back to the playoffs. The guys really stepped up down the stretch and made it happen. We're really happy as a club with the performance of our core and we believe that we can win a cup in the next few years.

Q: How would you say the draft went?

C: The draft went very well. We're very excited to add JK Grenier to our team, and we can see him making an impact in the next few years. Also, any time you have the opportunity to add a young player as talented as Brett Connolly, you have to jump on that opportunity.

As for the Huselius trade, we weren't going to resign Dustin Penner, and as both players' contracts were expiring, we saw it as a low-risk way to get a leg up on signing a good forward. Kristian was a fan-favorite in his time here in Calgary and whenever you can add a player as skilled as he is, you should take advantage. Even if we can't work out a deal, it was a low-risk move that I'm very happy with.

Q: What are your plans for the rest of the off-season?

C: Well, we've got a few guys who are going to need new contracts, so we'll be negotiating those in the near future. We have some openings we'd like filled, but it comes down to what's available, and we'll jump at any chance to add talented players. I'm not going to rule out anything. If we can improve our hockey team, we will by any means necessary.

Q: Thank you for your time

Re: This Fire is Out of Control - Calgary Flames BaGM

Off-season report

Resigning period

Calgary Flames signed the following players:

LW Kristian Huselius - 2 Years $7M
C Olli Jokinen - 1 Year $3.1M
C Brendan Morrison - 1 Year $1.8M
RW Lee Stempniak - 1 Year $1.7M
D Scott Hannan - 1 Year $1.6M

LW Tommy Tremblay - 3 Years $2.4M
D Mike Schwindt - 3 Years $2.2M
C JK Grenier - 3 Years $2M

The Flames also tendered qualifying offers to the following players:

LW Ryley Grantham
LW Carter Bancks
C Paul Byron
G Leland Irving

Free Agency

The Flames signed the following players:

RW Chris Clark 1 Year $1.5M
D Jim Vandermeer 1 Year $1.2M

RW Chris DiDomenico 1 Year $0.7M
D Jordan Henry 1 Year $0.6M
RW Viktor Tikhonov 3 Years $1.5M
RW Maxime Levesque 3 Years $1.5M

BIG TRADE:
Calgary Acquires
C Derek Roy
D Dominic Poulin
2013 3rd round pick

Buffalo Acquires
LW Alex Tanguay
LW Curtis Glencross
2013 2nd round pick

A second trade:
Calgary Acquires
C Mikael Granlund

Minnesota Acquires
C Brendan Morrison

Carter Bancks, Ryley Grantham, and Paul Byron accepted their qualifying offers. Leland Irving negotiated a 2-year $2M 1-way deal.

And that's it for the off-season. I was trying to land Roy forever, but I just couldn't do it without giving up Giordano or Tanguay. In the end I decided that Gio was more valuable since I have Bourque and Huselius ready to step in at LW. Still tough to give up my leading scorer though. Also, Minnesota came to me with that trade, which surprised me. Really happy to add a great prospect in Granlund. The future's looking bright for the Flames. Looking forward to next season, hopefully I'll have some templates made so I can pretty this up a bit.

Do you like your draft? Could you give their ability and potential?

What are your goals this seasons?

Good write up. Tough loss against Chicago.

Yeah, must've forgot to copy that part over. Here it is:

JK Grenier 18yo C TWF 68OVR A/C/B-
Tommy Tremblay 22yo LW GRN 70OVR C-/C-/B-
Pier-Antoine Dion 21yo C GRN 70OVR C-/C/C
Brendan Shinnimin 21yo C PLY 72OVR C-/C/C
Mike Schwindt 20yo D DFD 69OVR C/B-/B-
Nick Quinn 20yo D TWD 69OVR C/C/C
Adam Sedlak 21yo D TWD 70OVR C/C/C

Only really excited about Grenier to be honest, I wasn't really expecting any gems past the first two rounds. Out of the later picks, only Schwindt has any potential, but even then it's a stretch. I haven't done a lot of developing in NHL 12 though, so I'm not sure exactly what kind of ratings these potentials will correspond to.

I'm more excited about the trades I was able to make though. Penner was pretty much a failure, the biggest reason I accepted that trade was to dump Stajan's and Sarich's contracts. Huselius, on the other hand, was my favorite player when he played for the Flames, so I always try to get him back. I swear he scored more highlight-reel goals than every other player combined. Also, Connolly is a great prospect, well worth the price I had to pay, and I wanted to get rid of Hagman, so anything coming back is a bonus.

Plus I added some big prospects in the off-season, so a weak draft doesn't hurt me too much. Poulin is going to be a monster in a few years, and Granlund has top-line potential.

I'm gonna do a big season preview once I get some templates and graphics done, I'll address goals then.

Honestly I'm not too broken up about the Chicago series. Beating Edmonton made the season a success, and I never felt like I had a chance in that series. Kiprusoff absolutely stood on his head, I cannot emphasize enough how well he played. Even the games where I played well, he had some unreal stops in key moments, as I have a bad habit of turning it over in front of my net.

Re: This Fire is Out of Control - Calgary Flames BaGM

So here's my first attempt at a template for updates. Let me know what you guys think. The idea here is I would much rather write about the team than copy stats, so I'm gonna get the necessary information out and then write an article or something. Not sure why it copied so small, looked much bigger on my screen. I'll fix that when I do a real update.
