2015 Playoffs - First Round

Game Two

Strome plays hero in 2OT as Isles lead 2-0

Ryan Strome scored both goals for the home team as the Islanders won their second game at home to expand their lead to 2-0. Now, the series shift to Philadelphia and the Flyers can't afford to drop a game at home.
After a high-scoring affair in game 1, everybody expected the same things from these two really good offenses, but the goalies stole the show and kept a stalemate that needed two overtimes to solve.
Isles' starter goalie Jaroslav Halak picked up an injury during the extra frame and may miss the rest of the series

2015 Playoffs - First Round

Game Three

Flyers kill 7 penalties en route to huge win

The Philadelphia Flyers needed to win the first game of the series at Wells Fargo Center if they wanted to avoid falling in a near-unavoidable 3-0 hole against the New York Islanders. Even with two huge 5-on-3 penalties against them before the first period had ended, the Flyers scored 3 goals on the second frame to erase an 1-0 deficit and win their first game of these series.

Note: The fifth Flyers' goal was a shorthanded one. They must be the first team in NHL history to score a SHG in a series before scoring a PPG.

2015 Playoffs - First Round

Game Four

Giroux tallies two, Flyers even series

After being held scoreless for the first 3 games of these first round series, Flyers' star center Claude Giroux finally found his groove and scored two goals to lead his team to a 5-1 blowout, tying the series against the New York Islanders at two games a piece.
Philly's power play finally worked as they scored two times on the man advantage. The penalty kill was also good, blanking the Isles' power play unit and scoring a shorty for the second straight game.
Now, the series shift back to Long Island. After missing the first 4 games with an injury, Kyle Okposo will be back for the Islanders, giving a huge problem for the Flyers' defense.

2015 Playoffs - First Round

Game Five

Tavares' Shorthanded goal proves to be the difference; Match Point New York Islanders.

Even after seeing their defender Lubomir Visnovsky put the puck into their own net, the New York Islanders didn't give up on the game. Their special teams were really good tonight and with a sharp play by Chad Johnson (finally) they won another one at home to make it 3-2 on the series. They now have the first opportunity to close it and advance to the conference semifinals as the series shift back to Philadelphia for a single bout.
After scoring the goal ahead goal on a Power Play, the Islanders had to face a penalty of their own heading into the third period. But that wasn't a problem as John Tavares caught the defense sleeping and slammed an one timer home from the slot area. The 2 goal deficit proved to be too large for the Flyers to come back and they fell short.
Now, Philly will face the first elimination game at home, where they won their previous two games.

2015 Playoffs - First Round

Game Six

Flyers score 2 shorthanded goals to force game 7

The Philadelphia Flyers showed they won't go down so easily by scoring two shorthanded goals and bringing the series back to New York for a win-or-go-home game seven. Once again, the penalty killing unit of the Flyers was really good, as they didn't allow a single powerplay goal and scored twice. Now, it comes down to this as both teams will fight hard at the Coliseum.

Note: The Flyers scored 5 goals every home game of these series.

2015 Playoffs - First Round

Game Seven

End of the drought: Isles win game seven to advance

After 21 seasons, the New York Islanders finally won a playoff series again by beating the Philadelphia Flyers in game seven at the Nassau Coliseum. It was a good, heated match that saw the Isles' backup goalie, Chad Johnson, step up and deflect 37 of Philly's 38 shots.
For the Flyers, this will be the second straight season in which they lose a playoff series in the game seven for a fellow Metropolitan division team as they lost last year's first round to the Rangers. Offseason now begins in Philadelphia and expect it to be a busy one as lots of issues need to be adressed.

Note: what a fun game this was. Of course nobody likes to lose but I'm glad we didn't arrive too far with this nothing-more-than-average team. The most beautiful thing is that I lost fair and square: no cheesy goals, no impossible misses, no out-of-this-world saves by a backup goalie. I dominated the game after they scored the second goal but couldn't tie it and I'm okay with that. Now, the offseason begins for us. It will be my first NHL offseason so if I screw it up you shouldn't be surprised.
Hope you all keep following. This is shaping up to be a really fun dynasty.
