Re: Purple Rising: The Story of the Newfoundland Ice Caps

Team - Roster -Andy Laughton
Andrjez "Andy" Laughton, G #45

Age: 22
Shoots: Left
Hometown: Warsaw, Poland
Height: 6"4
Weight: 217 lbs

Andrjez "Andy" Laughton was born in the capital of Poland, Warsaw. Growing up a forward, Andjrez would outgrow the position at a young age, with a large growth spurt before his age 13 birthday due to his skating being somewhat awkward for a boy at his size, at his age. At this time his coach moved the slower Laughton into the net where he would instantly find a home. Laughton would play his juniors in the Erste Liga, at Orli Znojmo garnering little draft hype coming into his draft year, partly due to Znojmo being a lower level team at his time there, and only playing in 18 professional games. Scouts from the Newfoundland Ice Caps, however, liked his fluid movements in net, and size. He would be drafted in the 6th round, and this was even considered a "reach" but the Erste Liga scouts for the team said he was a gem of a pick.

In his first NHL season, Laughton has responded well. In his first 9 games, his record of 4-4-1 and his .890 SV% may seem low, but he's won his last three starts in net, and the team has said his overall play has increased. There's a strong feeling within the organization that he's got elite potential and could be the goalie of the future for the Ice Caps.

Newfoundlands' Investment in Eastern Europe Paying Off

November 19, 2023
Article By: Robert O'Tanner, NHL Coorspondant

Upon entering the league, the Newfoundland Ice Caps were determined to do things differently. Their homebase is an odd province within Canada - much more mild than others due to it's sea-fairing pastime. They chose the color purple, a color that has been essentially been wiped from the entire league over the course of the last decade. This concept of being "different" would boil over to their scouting department as well; they've gone to Eastern Europe, and have done quite well.

Over the last few years, the Ice Caps have spent lots of draft capital on Eastern European talents. The most obvious of this capital was in 2020, when the Ice Caps took ErsteLiga RW, and Bosnian born Gregory Cassivi. Cassivi was considered a top-end talent, but very few thought he was the definitive top pick. Jakub Lisin, the 5th pick in the 2021 Entry Draft, from Russia, is another example of high end draft capital being spent on the Eastern European front. Laughton, in net, was a 6th round selection out of Poland whom the team believes could be the guy long term in net. Martin Kaut, drafted out of the ExtraLiga, is another former Soviet-Bloc draft pick, selected with the 1st pick int he 2nd round in his draft season. Ealias Brashear was a 3rd round selection from Romania, another player the team feels very excited about, is yet another example of the team's insistence on talent coming from this side of the world.

While most teams draft heavy in the Canadian Juniors, the Ice Caps, much like Newfoundland itself, has gone off the board. But right now, the team is seeing huge benefits and this could make the rest of the league put just a little more time and effort into these Eastern European countries. Either that, or the Ice Caps will just keep picking up interesting talent from less-so-likely areas. And reap the benefits.
