How a team can end the game with 1 single point

I just started playing Madden 17, so I apologize if this has already been mentioned, especially since the rule change went into effect last year and should probably be in Madden 16 as well.

Anyway with the new rule that allows a team to score 2 points by scoring a TD on defense by stopping a PAT/2-pt. conversion attempt, this allows for something called a conversion safety. A conversion safety is extremely rare, even more rare than the Chiefs Eric Berry scoring 2 points on a pick 6 by the Falcons and ultimately giving the Chiefs 29-28 victory because of that play.

The conversion safety has happened a few times in college football, one being in a Bowl game between Kansas St. and Oregon in 2011 (I believe).

Practically speaking, and using the Chiefs pick 6 example above, hypothetically the Falcons could have gotten a 1 point conversion safety if Eric Berry after intercepting the ball and crossing his own goal line got tackled in his own endzone by a Falcons player for a safety. In essence, this would have given the Falcons 1 point essentially being the same as kicking a PAT.

Now here's the scenario where in the unlikely event (and I mean practically 0% chance) a team could actually have 1 single point on the scoreboard:

Lets use the Chiefs vs Falcons again. Lets say it was the beginning of the game and the Falcons just scored the first TD going up 6-0, and now they want to go for a 2pt. conversion, to take an early 8-0 lead, but Eric Berry picks it just like in the real game. This time Eric Berry as he's getting to the other endzone for the score, runs out of breath and gets stripped from behind at the 1 yard line (think Leon Lett, Larry Fitz chasing James Harrison SuperBowls) and he fumbles the ball and Falcons player picks it up at the 1 but he couldnt stop his momentum and also gets tackled in his own endzone for safety... in this VERY CRAZY UNLIKELY event the Chiefs would score 1 single point for that conversion safety!! So there you have it... have fun with this little trivia fact during gameday, and confusing the hell out of your friends with a 6-1 final score.

Hey, that's cool. Thanks!

Re: How a team can end the game with 1 single point

Funny you mention this because I think about it every once in awhile. I played NCAA dynasties with friends from 1999-2014. In the PS2 days and prior a bunch of us would go to a friends house to play our games at all hours of the day and night. We were looking at the weekly scores once and there was a score where one team had only scored a single point! We were perplexed because we didn't think it was possible, so we went to the internet and found out about the conversion safety. Ha, I still think it was a bug as I doubt the conversion safety was even in the simulation engine, however I feel like we successfully reproduced a conversion safety in the game (don't 100% remember that part). I'd find it funny if someone could get it to work in Madden. Anyway, that is my conversion safety story, the time the simulation engine produced a score with 1 point!

Ah, just watched the video, nice!

I was hoping to hear if there was commentary that covered that unlikely scenario. I had no idea this existed and a very cool find.

Wow that's hilarious!

I probably would have saw the final score being 1 and thought it was a glitch (like when you sim in madden and a team wins by 1 point in OT- wtf??) had I not discovered it myself with a friend. Our story is, we made a created team based on his middle school who he hated at the time, and made the RB his principal with 0 speed 0 agility, etc. so they did a hb toss/pitch on the 2pt conversion attempt and the RB was so slow he couldnt catch up with the pitch and with the snow it ended up rolling all the way back for a safety and our team got 1 single point.

Its also amazing not just the sim engine picked up, but the fact that the developers went into detail enough to include it!

The good old one point safety. A friend and I were talking about this at a high school game the one day and a few days later I got one in Madden in a human vs human dynasty game to tie the game with no time left to send it to overtime. Greatest time of my life!

Re: How a team can end the game with 1 single point

I knew that this was a college football thing, but I had no idea the one point safety rule had been adopted in the NFL (turns out the NFL added the rule in 2015 along with the other PAT rule changes). Neat find!

Wow - how in the world did it happen? Were you going for 2pt conversion for the win? hahaha
