360 controller works fine (Madden 08) on it's own. Don't know about PS3 controller.

Re: PS2>PS3/PS4

PS4 over PS2 all day any day. Many more ratings have an impact on the game now. Progression/regression creates balance in the game. More animations, better player movement, football schemes and strategies play an importance. I could probably go on.
I'm not suggesting the latest Madden trumps every ascpect of the PS2 days but I feel it's not even close anymore.
Now PS2 vs PS3 Madden...that may be a different story.

Agreed. I wish the franchise mode had as many features now as the old one did.

So do you think the PS4 versions have a more in depth Franchise mode?

Not one of the PS4 Maddens have kept my interest because the franchise experience just isn't as good as the PS2 days.

Of course the graphics are so much better on the PS4, but that's not why I play football games. Gameplay and in depth franchise is what holds my interest.

Not sure if it's as in depth but it definitely has more replay value. It comes down to the ratings having an importance, balance in progression/regression where you have ups and downs the strength of your team throughout many years of franchise and the importance of play calling and balanced gameplay which I feel why PS2 Madden could not hold my interest more than a couple seasons.

Personal preference I suppose. Football schemes and strategies is why I think ps2 is infinitely better. Online ps2 you would find players that would run the ball all day, players that ran short west coast passing style, players that did hurry up all game. Some styles were annoying, but it mixed it up.

Now everyone plays the same offense. It's stale and repetitive. The ps4 game bores the crap out of me.

I wouldn't hold that so much against the PS4 as I would the time period. I think a lot of the difference in play calling you point out has to do with today's internet crazed social media generation. Back then people experimented on their own and played what offense worked for them whereas nowadays there are videos of cheese plays and guides to tell you what offense is the best. I remember playing the PS2 maddens all I had was the Prima game guide each year that showed the teams best players and strategies.

Re: PS2>PS3/PS4

For me there is no component of the PS2 game that is better than what we currently have.

On the field any attempt at a comparison is laughable, especially with respect to strategy, AI, football fundamentals, user agency, commentary, and presentation. With respect to variety of gameplay modes, the current game has multiple ways to play with MUT, Franchise, and Draft Champions all worth playing. Speaking specifically to Franchise itself, playing online franchise with my brother and our mutual friends across the country matters far more to me than any of the few missing bells and whistles the old games had that the current ones don't.

The one point I will give in the old games' favor is specific to the PC Madden games, which were based on the PS2 engine: the capacity those games had for supporting customization via in-game features and third-party tools, specifically with respect to teams. I have fond memories of running a 32-custom-team league on Madden 06 PC. Unfortunately, the current Madden console game simply can't do that.

That notwithstanding, I wouldn't trade what we have now for that old game under any circumstance.
