Madden 06 from Xbox had the same problem

Im so glad there is a lateral button. The only problem is that im really gonna take advantage of this and lateral when i dont need to which is real unrealistic

2. If you are running with the ball, you can press a button to toss the ball to a teammate: a lateral. But if you accidentally press this button when there's no teammate around you (fairly easy to do), you merely fumble the ball to the ground. How stupid.

He may know video games but apparently he isn't much up on football. Last time I checked, if you lateraled the ball and missed it was actually a fumble. So the answer to the last question, not very.
