Or I'm an idiot.
I remember a highlight of the Giants a few years ago where their kicker pulled his hamstring earlier in the game, so they put in the punter for a game tying field goal from about 40 yards.

It was close... if the uprights were moved up to the goal line and placed ten yards to the left.

John Elway was always the Broncos backup EP kicker...

Re: Shouldn't punters be holders?

In the CFL there's often only one guy who handles both kicking and punting, so it's not unimaginable that there are guys in the NFL who are also capable of doing both.

Frank Gifford could play QB, HB, WR, and kick field goals.

It's interesting how far specialization has come in the NFL. Some teams even have two kickers on their roster: one is for field goals/extra points and the other is a kick off specialist.

Ochocinco kicked a FG and an XP in a preseason game, so it's not hard to imagine that he's the Bengals' emergency kicker.

I believe Welker would be the Patriots' emergency kicker, since he once kicked an XP and a FG while playing for Miami.

Why? Years ago there was a depth chart for holder (or at least the option to choose him) and at one time they took that out if I remember correctly...

Re: Shouldn't punters be holders?

This can all be fixed by just adding a holder position to the depth chart. Because not all teams have the punter holding, and not all teams have a backup QB holding.
