Oh, I would have chalked that up to AI...

considering its an AI issue. I think the pitching mechanic is great. It's one of the bright spots for me...

Re: Gamespot give MLB 2k9 a 4.5

As someone who doesn't necessarily mind the aggressive AI hitters, I am enjoying the heck out of this game...something I haven't done with a "sim style" game in a long while...I didn't play 2k8, had 2k7 and traded it in (wasn't 'feeling' it).

First baseman issue: when using "classic": allow the meter to move into the red and no problem. I have since adapted to using the stick and I have maybe a 5% chance of pulling the 1b off the bag. This was a matter of getting used to the controls.

Fielding: I have had issues with outfielders muffing easy catches..and almost every time, had I been paying more attention to the player animations, I could have adjusted so the miss didn't happen. Again, it seems that this was a matter of familiarity with the game.

There are annoying little things that bother me: not being able to change any music once in a franchise. ..no easy way to see player info during the a game. Running the bases has always been tricky for me with next gen games, but that's my problem, not the game's.

In any event, the more I play this game, the more I am convinced that this game is a 7.5.....a 4.5 would indicate that the game is seriously broken. Seriously broken, to me, does not describe MLB 2k9.

Again, this is the viewpoint of someone who is not a "hardcore basebal sim-gamer", so take it for what it's worth.

The biggest issue with 2K9 on the field is over-aggressive CPU hitters. That's pretty much it

I am obviously aware of issues with the first baseman's foot coming off the bag, but it has happened to me once in ten games. That's a lot of put outs at first for it not to happen. I am also aware of complaints about fielding. But in the same ten games I've played, I've never experienced an outfielder not catching a ball or line drive. I don't know what I'm doing differently than many of you, but I'll keep doing it.

The hit variety is terrific (the best since ESPN 2K4, in my opinion). I've seen liners, bloops, choppers, moon shots, pop-ups -- everything. BFJ's sliders produce great, realistic results. The best this series has seen in years.

The presentation is incredible and the game plays smoothly. Yes, there are occasional glitches (managers stuck in dugouts, etc.). But it does so many things right. The camera angles, the commentary, I could go on and on. Visual Concepts is ridiculed for minor real-time world glitches (that don't effect gameplay, mind you). At the same time, managers change skin colors during scripted cut scenes in The Show, and it's excused.

I think people are still bitter and upset about the exclusive license. If gamers had the chance to chose between All Star Baseball, MLB 2K, MVP and High Heat... people would be less angry. But they don't.

I also think people are frustrated, on some level, that MLB 2K9 isn't as good as they wanted it to be. Or it's not as good as The Show. I understand that. But the game is world's better than last year. And mark my words, MLB 2K9 has laid a foundation for a terrific baseball game.

If I had to, I'd give MLB 2K8 a C- letter grade. If the over-aggressiveness is patched, 2K9 is a solid B. That is a lot of improvement in just one year -- during a developer switch. I'm happy with that.
I've read a ton of rediculous posts in my lifetime, and this one is right up there on the BS scale.

I agree, the pitching is great, especially compared to last year, a huge step up. It's definitely an AI issue, it has nothing to do with the pitching.

And on a further point.... stop saying that things should be rated higher with a patch. We shouldn't have to have a patch to make a game play the way previous iterations of something played, or just straight up play properly. Patching something like a stat being miscounted 30 years down the road in a franchise due to some database glitch is one thing...patching a game to make the CPU play fundamentally sound baseball as a whole...unnacceptable.

co-sign

And I'm a huge fan of 2K Sports but this game is a 4.5. Did they even test the game.. I'm shocked that this game was release.
The first base glitch happened to me 3 time in one inning! The outfielders drop the ball, run into walls, can't field a ball off the wall, the slow down on certain fly balls for some reason, run backwards for a second when you switch outfielders... the infielders don't attack grounders, cross each other up expectantly, the throwing meter is way too sensitive.. etc. etc. etc.

-i always give a company the benefit of the doubt, especially 2K. But this one takes the cake, how could you release a product like this seriously? before online gaming became the norm for consoles we didn't rely on patches, the game was pretty much as is for better or for worse. so why is everything all about a patch now?

Re: Gamespot give MLB 2k9 a 4.5

There's no way this game is a 4.5 and last years is a 6.5. Last years was far, far worst than this years. But seriously, why is everyone concerned with what Gamespot said? There not a trusted source anymore, I said it before and I'll say it again, they lost all credibility when they gave GTA IV a perfect 10. Just take the game for what it is, a mediocre Baseball game that is fun and frustrating at the same time, just like real Baseball.
