Because he doesnt want to start Opening Day.
Same as last year, he told Dusty he doesnt want to start Opening Day.
Word is he will start game 3.
He recently missed time being sick and now he is lined up to pitch game 3.

He just prefers not to.
For one he doesnt like pitching day games which is silly but take a look at the difference in games he pitches at night compared to day games. He is a completely differnent pitcher when he pitches at night, he ERA is like 2 runs lower at night. One theory he has come up with is he doesnt sleep well at night and therefore is tired for day games. He said he sleeps much better during the day and always feels refreshed taking a nap before a night game start.
Two he doesnt like the attention that comes with pitching on Opening Day in Cincy.

The last sentence is what I was thinking actually. He pitched in the playoff, opening day is more pressure than that?

Re: 2011 Cincinnati Reds

Arroyo is kind of an oddball from what I've interprited in that the big time starts aren't a huge deal to him, he doesnt get all caught up in the hype so he would be good for playoffs when he remains calm but Opening Day is a privelidge & to start not so much a must win. I think its cool of him to give up his chance for someone else who would value the Opening Day nod more.

My question is who are the starters for the first five games?

Volquez, Bailey (?), Arroyo, Wood (?), Volquez (?)

Yes
Game 1 Volques game 2 Bailey game 3 Arroyo game 4 Wood and then back to Volquez for game 5.
They will not user their 5th starter until April 9th I believe.

Re: 2011 Cincinnati Reds

Now Bailey is hurnt too and will start the season on the DL.
Also Arroyo is still sick there is some kind of virus in his lungs.
LeClure will take Baileys spot in the rotation, they are thinking he will miss his first two starts.

They think it's valley fever. That's not good. Conor Jackson was basically useless two years ago for the D'Backs because he fought that almost all season it seems like.
