Was that stuff even applied then in just a “play now” game?
No, it wasn't applied to "Play Now", which is what I was getting at with their possible inability or unwillingness to extract it from the mode it came with. If you're at the drawing board weighing what makes sense to focus on for 2K13, it's not hard to see such a task hitting the cutting room floor.

That being said, I do see plenty of viability for those options. MVP Baseball 2005 had a Sepia filter that could be toggled on and off as a standalone. For the complicated tasks 2K's pulled off for years, finding a way to turn their already created filter into a toggle probably wouldn't have required earth shattering sacrifice and manpower. Same deal for era-specific rules and keeping the era-specific art they'd created for the dornas, baskets, etc.

As for why these options would work or make sense even without a challenge:

1. Inter-Era Play. Yes, it'd make sense that some gamers would love to run a Quick Play between the 1960's Lakers and 2022 Warriors sans 3-point line. The "who would win" debate is endless and always includes "Well they didn't even have a 3 point line so...". Era-specific rules and regulations would be another fun tool to help those hypotheticals come to life.

2. Custom Leagues. The more options the merrier. If you want to get zany and run a modern league with a "Bad Boys" rule setting, knock yourself out. Start a MyLeague where there's no 3-point line. Get rid of the shot clock and go four corners to preserve a lead.

3. Making the Classic Teams More Authentic and Tangible. The greatest experience I've ever had with the pre-'79 teams happened in 2K12, because it felt like I was playing pre-'79 basketball. The rules, the limited signature animations, the basic dunks, and of course, no 3-point line. There's so much more intrigue and appeal in the notion of selecting '72 Lakers and '71 Bucks in the team select then pressing Y to toggle rules, where you could select "1970's - no 3-point line". That way, it's not just 2022 basketball with classic skins. It's literally a new (or old) experience.

4. Classic Rosters. It's a niche community, but it's one that would greatly bolstered by the knowledge they could make their own classic teams and use them with actual rules from that period.

The modding community spoiled some real surprises for Madden and 2K this past year with the way they are releasing content. Wouldn’t be surprised if that was a factor at all.

They do all this and its a preorder from me and I have a pledge to no longer get the latest sports games, wait til there's a sale or on gamepass and never preorder...

They don’t come close to next gen even with mods. The textures and lighting are still noticeably worse, and that’s ignoring the gameplay deficiencies as well.

Trust me, I tried to go back to “old gen” via PC + mods and it looked like putting makeup on a pig.

Barkley hates video games and has said many times on tv even he is not doing it, unless they help the lesser players that have retired. Example would be he would not want the Sixer team or Phx team to just be the starting 5 or 7 known players and then bench is those CAP that the game puts in. He wants them to actually reach out and pay the vets that were 10-12 on the bench on all these classic teams.

I have such a good created Barkley on 2K (it’s not the most common Barkley that has the most downloads either. That one isn’t great as apparently 2K22 made it really hard to create a good Barkley face) but one I found that had a very good face that looks like him. Also his movements etc. are really like Barkley. It mostly satisfies my need to have Barkley in the game. The Reggie created player is not as satisfying as he doesn’t look much like Reggie.

Kinda irrelevant with the new game so close but my Reggie ended up decent. Will probably try to recreate this one if he’s not in next years game still.

DAMN that’s a good Reggie! Are you on PS5? I’m on XBox and haven’t seen that one. Am I able to DL it?
