Here on OS ? If so, take a second to quote those posts specifically.

Re: Rise of the Tomb Raider

There is not one quote from spencer in that article that mentions the game by name. He only says he did not buy Tombraider. That's why it screams damage control to me. For all we know he might have a deal that keeps rise of Tombraider off playstation.

All that article tells me for sure is Microsoft does not own Tombraider as a franchise. Which we all already knew.

Unless I missed a quote. Then disregard this post.

Wonder if that could mean it just comes on PC or if PS4 is guaranteed a version a year later or something....

Probably something like Mass Effect 2. So yeah.

I think its pretty funny everyone is mad at Microsoft. Was Square forced to take the deal? Not that we're aware of. Square could have said no and released it for every platform at the same time. If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at them.

Re: Rise of the Tomb Raider

It's brainless to make it permanently exclusive. Exclusive content? Sure. Exclusive bundle package? Fine. But totally exclusive game from a third party and to the one with the fewest consoles on the market? It's silly.

However, a timed exclusive? It's annoying, but if Square can eek out a lil' more money out of the arrangement and still make bank on the back end? Go for it.

It's called cashflow. Regardless of how one game sells companies have to keep cash coming in to support development endeavors. IMHO one of the companies (not really sure which) must have been low on funds and this deal helped fill that cash pipeline. Just a guess, but other than need for cash, security, and an extended development cycle, there's really no benefit to go exclusive.

Interesting read from wikipedia on the game regarding sales:

Quote:
The game had sold more than 1 million copies in less than forty-eight hours of its release.[105] In the United Kingdom, Tomb Raider debuted at number one on the charts, and became the biggest UK title launch in 2013, surpassing the sales of Aliens: Colonial Marines, before being overtaken by Grand Theft Auto V.[106][107] Tomb Raider set a new record for the franchise, more than doubling the debut sales of Tomb Raider: Legend. Furthermore, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Tomb Raider set new week one records as the fastest-selling individual formats of any Tomb Raider title so far, a record which was previously held by Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.[106] Tomb Raider also topped the charts in France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United States.[108][109][110][111][112] In the United States, Tomb Raider was the second best-selling title of March, excluding digital download sales, only behind BioShock Infinite.[113] In Japan, Tomb Raider debuted at number four with 35,250 units sold.[114] On 26 March 2013, Square Enix announced that the game sold 3.4 million copies worldwide at retail, but has failed to reach predicted sales targets.[115] However, on 29 March 2013, Crystal Dynamics defended Tomb Raider's sales, stating the reboot had the "most successful launch" of any game this year in addition to setting a new record for highest sales in the franchise's history.[116] On 22 August 2013, Darrell Gallagher, head of product development and studios for Square Enix, announced on Gamasutra that the game sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.[117] On 17 January 2014, Scot Amos, executive producer of Tomb Raider, revealed that at the end of 2013 the game achieved profitability.[118] On 3 February 2014, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, a re-release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, debuted atop of the UK charts.[119] On 6 March 2014, Gallagher predicted that the game will surpass 6 million units by the end of the month.[120] As of June 2014, Tomb Raider has sold over 6.5 million units.[121]
