Re: The Chairboys of Wycombe (FIFA 13)

Pfeifer Finds Diamond in the Rough

Wycombe - It had been largely reported that Wycombe were in contact with a young Argentinean phenom throughout the month of July. Rumors spiraled around for a while and when no word was mentioned during the preseason training and friendlies, all believed it not to be true. However, in the last 24 hours it has been reported that Coach Pfeifer flew in a youngster by the name of Juan Maresca from Argentina. With that said, both sides have come to an agreement on what looks to be a two year deal worth about $500 per week.

This is obviously a great boost to the Wycombe side that struggled in the preseason but seemingly came together to win their first npower League 2 match of the season.

Maresca has been pegged as an attacking winger, leaving Coach Pfeifer with the decision of possibly replacing striker Dean Morgan as the lone forward or even changing formations from Wycombe's standard 4-4-1-1. It does not look like Pfeifer will put Maresca out as a wide midfielder due to his offensive-minded play. Pfeifer has a lot to ponder with a looming Capital One Cup fixture mid-week.

Capital One Cup Round 1
Tues, Aug 7, 2012
Adams Park

Wycombe 3-0 Brentford

9' Sam Wood (Joel Grant) - WYC
54' Dean Morgan (Joel Grant) - WYC
71' Matthew Spring (Joel Grant) - WYC

Plenty to celebrate for Wycombe as they advance in the Capital One Cup.

Capital Success!

Wycombe found itself in front early thanks to a Joel Grant through ball to a cutting Sam Wood who made no mistake with his 18 yard blast. Joel Grant would continue to impress, finishing with an assist on all three goals. Dean Morgan's goal had a hint of offsides to it but the linesman kept his flag down, and finally Matthew Spring would put the game out of doubt. If Coach Pfeifer wanted to be picky, he could look to his captain Gareth Ainsworth with a bit of uncertainty as he missed his second penalty of the season. With all that said and done, Wycombe get past npower League 1 side Brentford at home easily with a 3-0 victory.

Northampton - Wycombe

77' Joel Grant - WYC

Joel Grant smashes in the lone goal.

Grant Volleys Wycombe Past Northampton

Wycombe have found their new manager, they've found their new formation, and now they've found their new superstar. Joel Grant has been in superb form following his three assist game in Round 1 of the Capital One Cup with the game-winning goal in the 77th minute away to Northampton. On paper the game looked to be bland with Northampton coming in with a 5-4-1 formation and Wycombe with their defensive 4-2-3-1. The first half stuck true to that, but the second half saw both teams pushing the tempo. Maximum points to start for Coach Pfeifer and maximum support from the fans. This could be the year for promotion for Wycombe!

Joel Grant has great pace. He proved to be a dangerous opponent back in League 2. Glad to see you are doing good so far too. How is CapOne Cup round 2 looking for you?

We were drawn with Swindon Town who are currently 2-0-1 and atop of npower League 1. The game is away, so I'm most likely going to come out in a bunker defense mentality!

EDIT: The game is home...still, I'll probably come in very defensive oriented.

Wycombe 3-3 Southend United

37' Caolan Lavery (Britt Assombalonga) - SOU

Teammates celebrate Juan Maresca's wonder strike.

Goals Galore

An early candidate for game of the season saw Southend United travel to Wycombe and come away with a 3-3 draw. The goals came early and often with Juan Maresca scoring his first goal in a Wycombe uniform in the 16th minute that was volleyed home with such precision over the keeper who never stood a chance. That goal seemed to wake Southend who were getting dominated. They would even the score in the 26th minute thanks to a loose ball trickling through to Michael Timlin who paid the price for touching it past Wycombe's Matt Ingram. Timlin would be subbed out just a minute later with an apparent upper leg injury. Eventually down 3-2 with time beginning to fade away, Coach Pfeifer subbed in CAM Bruno Andrade who made an immediate impact while getting at the tired defenders of Southend. The super sub then found himself in space by the touchline where he played a ball that seemingly dropped innocently in the box when a sprinting Joel Grant half volleyed the ball into the near upper corner of the net. Three games into the season and no losses for Coach Pfeifer. A never say die attitude is beginning to shine through Wycombe; something the players have absorbed from Pfeifer.

Rochdale 1-1 Wycombe

51' Anthony Stewart (Josh Scowen) - WYC
52' Bobby Grant (Ashley Grimes) - ROC

Anthony Stewart raises above the Rochdale defense to open the scoring.

Another Draw for Pfeifer

A true tale of two halves. Scoreless and virtually effortless in the first half turned into a wide open field come the second. Anthony Stewart opened the scoring in the 51st minute as he headed home a Josh Scowen corner kick in Scowen's first appearance of the season. Without time to blink, Wycombe were picking it out of their own net. Ashley Grimes sent Bobby Grant through with a lobbed ball over the Wanderer defense and Grimes side-footed the ball home to even the score. With 87 minutes shown on the clock, Bruno Andrade almost saw his rocket from just inside the 18 give Wycombe the late lead, but instead saw it clatter off the inside of the post. Round 2 of the Capital One Cup coming up mid-week, and Wycombe sitting in fourth has the fans jumping.

Wycombe battles from behind all game but celebrates in the end.

Wycombe Still Alive in All Competitions

After a first half to forget that included early goals by Danny Whitaker and Jay O'Shea, Wycombe finally woke up in the second half. It started fast with a blistering shot by Bruno Andrade that found the side netting from ten yards out, but never seemed to find another tally until the stroke of regulation time. After hitting the post five minutes before, Dean Morgan showed Coach Pfeifer why he was subbed in as he dribbled his way into the box and slid one home, low to the near post. As if that wasn't enough action, extra time saw Chesterfield reclaim the lead just two minutes in from Marc Richards who ended with a goal and two assists. It didn't take long for Wycombe's Jo Kuffour to show off his pace by stripping the defender of the ball and streaking in on goal before calmly dispatching the shot just inside the far post. Eventually the game needed penalties to decide it. With usual penalty taker Gareth Ainsworth, having already missed two penalties this campaign, (one in preseason) still on the bench, Coach Pfeifer decided to sub him in anyway for them. As the penalties wore on Chesterfield would grab a 3-1 lead with the attempt to end the game. From this moment on Wycombe's 19 year old keeper, Matt Ingram took over. Collecting three consecutive penalty saves, Ingram led the comeback that saw Gareth Ainsworth up down 3-2 as Wycombe's last shooter of the five. Ainsworth would not let his poor form spoil Ingram's sensational effort as he converted his spot kick. Grant Basey would then convert his and see Ingram make the last of his three consecutive saves to win the game 3-3, 4-3 on penalties.
