I've been a huge proponent of Coryell getting in. I know a lot of his scheme owed greatly to Sid Gillman but Coryell expanded on it. He made the TE an important part of the aerial offense and you can't deny the greatness of those Charger teams. If they hadn't choked in '79, Fouts didn't throw stupid INTs in '80 or they played in warmer weather against Cincy in '81 they would've gone to 3 SBs and probably have won 2 of the 3. Another thing about Coryell is that the EXACT same offense was used by the Rams when they were the greatest show on turf. Kellen Winslow Sr. said as much during the Missing Rings show on the Chargers as the terminology was exactly the same. Also the Coryell offense was used during the Mike Sherman years in Green Bay to great effect.

As for the complaint about Carter and Reed? First of all, Carter was an immense talent that just caught TDs. The man was the master of the fade route and made some of the most spectacular catches i've ever seen. As for Reed and proclaiming him to be a stat compiler who never had big games in the postseason well, let's take into account that he was the Bills main threat and more often then not he was double teamed. It's not like he wasn't effective. Also you discount Reed when he took punishment that few other WRs would take (especially today) as he caught a lot of passes up the middle where he'd be MURDERED just about every time.

I'm not going to defend Doug Williams so much because I did say he's iffy but most of you guys only remember him as a Redskin. Williams was far better before his knees were shredded up and he was pretty mobile. He was never a high percentage QB but he was pretty damn effective in Tampa Bay. He could use his legs and made some big passing plays when needed. Most of the time the Bucs tended to emphasize the run more and the passing game was more of a low percentage passing game as they tended to throw the ball deep a lot.

I'm a big Flutie fan but there's not enough body of work. He's in the CFL HOF though. If he was given a fair shake in Chicago or in his second stint in the league with Buffalo I think he would put up good enough numbers that he might get in like Warren Moon did.
