Re: So if Peyton Manning gets injured....

I think you take Luck and look to the future. Manning is 35 right now, would be 36 next year, plus if it is a season long injury like that then it will probably take him an additional year to get back to the top. At that point you are talking about him being 38 by the time everything is right with him. For a little historical reference, a few of the top name QBs to retire in the last 15 years:
age/name
34; Troy Aikman
38; Steve Young
41; Brett Favre
38; John Elway
38; Dan Marino
38; Kurt Warner

There seems to a theme there. Take Luck, let him learn under one of the best QBs ever for two years and then let him loose.

Very different situation with the Packers. Their QB had been talking about retirement for a couple of years already. They had no idea that he was going to play another 6 years.

Another thing with Manning --- he hasn't taken as many hits as other QB's in the league. Has he even had a single concussion? Contrast that with Favre, who injured about everything, and still managed to play until 41. I could see Manning stretching out his career at least as long. Also, since so much of Manning's game is mental, he would make an incredible game manager in the twilight of his career. If the Colts can build up a championship caliber defense over the next few years, Manning will still be good enough to take them to the Super Bowl. And if the Colts end up drafting Manning's replacement too soon, that's what will end up happening anyways --- Manning will go to a strong defensive team via free agency, and lead them deep into the playoffs. It's no coincidence that the teams that played in last year's Super Bowl had the league's 2 best defenses.
