Re: NFL Considering Expansion

I would like the NFL to contract to 28 teams. Honestly, I think the talent pool would be very diluted at 36 teams.

noob question:
How would they fill out the new teams?
It is just FA and draft.

last time they did it houston got to pick from a list each team made of 5 players that couldnt be on injured reserve, a kicker/punter or in the last year of their contracts (also only 1 vet of 10 years or more was allowed per team list) and they had to draft until they had 30 players or 38% of the salary cap

They do what they call an expansion draft. Every NFL Team lists 6 players that the expansion teams can take, and the two expansion teams would alternate selections. They'd probably be required to select a certain number of players or a minimum total salary. The rest of the team would be filled out by way of Free Agency and Draft.

The Texans actually made out pretty well in the 2002 expansion draft. They got 4 pro bowlers (though Boselli would never make it on the field due to injuries).

Good to know.
If(big if) this was to happen, when might it happen.
I know LA is close/almost done having their stadium ready, but I dont know if another city is ready.
I would still watch it without any hesitiation.

I'd think going from 16 to 18 or 20 games a weekend would hardly be noticeable. Especially since they're expanding Thursday games. The overall talent level might drop but you'd have to be watching all the games to notice it on a macro level.
